Whiskey!

I just bought some more Baker’s and asked the staff at the store to call me if they can get me some Booker’s.

Thanks for digging this up…

I bought this a couple of days ago…it’s like a cheaper version of Laphroaig.

To whoever lives in the parts of the US where Pappy Van Winkle’s is available I envy you. From what I’ve heard it’s the best.

Yo Nards/MacGyver!

Im not sure if this has been mentioned in the thread yet, but have you tried Johnny Walker double black?
I love black label, but I plan to try out double black this weekend.

jack daniels and johnny walker should jump off a bridge together. i’ve had red, black, gold and green johnny walker and they are all disappointing. jack daniels isn’t even whiskey. tennessee should sink back into the depths from whence it came.

I’ve seen Booker’s mentioned a few times - that is the king of Bourbons.

For smooth whiskey fans, I highly suggest checking out Tulamore Dew Irish Whiskey. 2 or 3 fingers in a lowball glass, with either a single cube of ice or just a few sprinkles of water is a fine way to celebrate St. Paddy’s.

I’ve yet to find a good mass-market tequila, but if you’re lucky enough to find one of the small artisan labels that really do tha damn thang, you will have a transcendent experience (if you can find it, I like a brand called Don Crispin I found in Puerto Vallarta).
Really, you need to look further.

7 Leguas both the Silver and the Reposado
Heradura Reposado or Añejo
or if you are feeling rich Don Julio Real Extra Añejo

Drink it straight, no ice (please god don’t do that to a decent drink) with a Sangrita Chaser.

If I fancy a change I drink Ron Zacapa Centenario 23 Solera.

Whenever anyone visits from home I ask them to bring me a bottle of Laphroig.

I’ve been enjoying this.

It is great stuff, we visited the distillery in Park City over Sundance…they make some serious product.

You should mail me a bottle if for no other reason than the shit I’ve had to put up with from you.

LOL, hand on heart promise here, if I am ever in the Montana area I will bring you a bottle and share a glass or two with you

I don’t think this has been mentioned yet, but my new favorite, especially if I’m drinking whiskey cocktails. I love it in a Sazerac and also makes a great Manhattan or Old-Fashioned.

Made in Templeton, IA. Difficult to find, mostly distributed in the midwest.

Yeah, I got a litre bottle at the airport a few months back. Ths was like Johnny Walker’s attempt at an Islay malt.

How in shit did I miss this thread?! I’m from Central Kentucky and grew up on basketball, thoroughbreds, and - of course - bourbon. Really wish I’d been around when the original discussion was taking place.

Eh, well. A lot has already been said, but I might add a few things:

 1. Bourbon should only be taken neat. Ever.

 2. Jack Daniel’s is pure swill (that’s said mostly in jest and is more of a KY v. TN thing than any real reason, but I digress).

 3. One mid-shelf bourbon I haven’t seen mentioned yet (unless I missed it) that I recommend often and always get a good response from is Eagle Rare. This is especially for those who prefer a smoother, more “wheated” bourbon. I prefer a higher rye content, myself. But I still really enjoy Eagle Rare.

 4. Pappy 23 is a fantastic bourbon. But for what you save on price Pappy 20 & 15 are near just as good, and many people who are very knowledgeable about bourbon would agree. I would venture that many wouldn’t know the difference in a blind taste test.

 5. My favorite everyday bourbon is Bulleit. As already stated, I prefer my bourbon with a higher rye content and Bulleit has one of the highest rye contents on the market. They also make a Bulleit Rye (green label) for those who might just prefer rye whiskey to bourbon altogether, which is quite tasty.

Woodford Reserve x2. Nectar of the gods right there. Neat is optimal. A couple ice cubes are allowed but I think you have to do a year in purgatory for each one you throw in.

That’s a classy whiskey for a having a glass or two on special occasions though. Don’t know about anyone else, but I’m a huge fan of Wild Turkey 101 on serious drinking nights. Stuff is great with a handful of ice early in the night, but I tend to devolve to just taking hits out of the bottle at some point or another lol.

Wild Turkey American Honey is good stuff. Pretty smooth imo. Might not be whiskey, but I think it’s worth mentioning.
I liked this one initially, but after two or three bottles it started to taste like ass to me. The honey flavour screws it up IMO and is probably something I would rarely go for unless I got sick of the traditional whiskey’s.

My favourites are JD old #7 as a fool proof beverage (go through probably a bottle a month), Ballentine’s if I am feeling in the mood for a smoother kind of whiskey, or Vat 69 if I want something with a bit more kick.

Tried Chivas Regal and quite frankly I don’t see what is so great about it.

You see, you’re one of the ones I envy. I only hear great things about Pappy’s.

Does anyone else use a decanter? Every once in a while, I’ll pour a bottle into one. Makes me feel all fancy and old school, like I’m pouring a glass for the Rat Pack.

Jameson is the standard, but I’ve been nursing a bottle of Johnnie Walker Black since Christmas. It’s really mellowed out over time and I’m definitely liking it more now than three weeks ago.

Kinda surprised I didn’t see this one mentioned yet, but a few months back I picked up a bottle of good ol’ J&B. I remember it always being around my grandmother’s house. Way too peppery straight, but it was okay with Coke.

Chris,

thats a beautiful decanter and a great idea.

Whiskey is my favorite spirit by far. I agree, it should only be consumed neat.

I love single malt scotch: laphroig, Glen Morainge, Oban, glen livet… each having their own distinct taste.

Some blended scotch whiskey, chivas regal

Especially bourbon- basil haydens, bookers, woodford, i guess jim beam on the everyday note.

Some interesting brands I have seen in this thread but havent located in my backwards ass draconian quaker state of PA. Looking to try more Rye whiskeys as well.
