I had some Baker’s this past weekend, and for whatever reason I had a lot of trouble handling it. Somewhere between the alcohol burn itself and the grain base, my esophagus wasn’t liking it. Which is unfortunate because it was mighty tasty.
HELP!!!
I believe I just had my first bout with gout. Waiting on the test results.
I do love my bourbon and I’ve been told that I’ll have to give up my alcohol! Do I need to quit completely or will I still be able to enjoy the “Nectar of the Gods”?

I think you just need more time working your way up to such high alcohol content. My first bottle of Bakers I felt the same way a few years ago, now I like it neat after having been more into the hobby for a couple years. In the mean time if you still have some, don’t be afraid to throw a splash of water in there, it can help loosen things up a bit.
I brought gout on acutely a few years ago by running outside three or four times a week in high heat and having 3 or 4 beers after and not drinking any water…foolish to be sure.
I didn’t drink beer for 9 months and whiskey only a few onces once a week for the same 9 months.
Had some Woodford with a cigar last night. I think after about a year of drinking whisky/ whiskey neat , I truly have found what type I will probably stick with. Bourbon just does not do it for me or is just OK. I think it’s the sweetness that I don’t like. Scotch ( especially peated ) is what I’ll probably be buying exclusively from now on.

I’m a little confused…do you mean you’ll stick with the Woodford?

I mean I’ll be sticking with Scotch. Although now that I think about it, I never did give Irish whiskey much of a try except Jameson. Maybe I’ll pick up a bottle of Redbreast 12. I think somebody also recommended Concannon (sp) ? Irish whiskey and that it had some peat in it. Sounds interesting.

Concannon is my go-to choice for a $20 bottle. I wouldn’t say it’s peaty, I get more citrus/lemony flavors from it.
I’ve been working on some Sazerac rye (I hoped to pick up some Whistlepig but they were out). I definitely like it. I can’t put my finger on it, but I kinda feel like if someone didn’t get the concept of a “sipping whiskey”, something like this would get the point across.

Yeah, citrus/lemony doesn’t sound like something I would like.

Tonight I just bought and am sampling my first bottle of Baker’s. I have had it in a bar before and enjoyed it.
It is truly delicious stuff. I’m drinking it neat like usual. A few years ago I would also have had the throat burn with this type of whiskey but now it doesn’t bother me that way at all.[/quote]
I had about 5 bottles of Bakers till the shop I bought it from stopped carrying it.
But then I found a place that carried Bookers and had three bottles of that till they stopped. probably good thing as it was about $75US a bottle.
Now I just drink the Costco one. Sure there may be a slight difference…but it’s only $18!
