A couple months ago, I was over at my wife’s cousin’s house and her boyfriend had left a bottle of Balvenie 21 yr Port cask Scotch. I had to try it and it was probably singularly the smoothest most enjoyable glass of scotch I have tried up to this point. Pretty pricey per bottle but it was fucking delicious.

It’s Costco’s Small Batch 7 year-old Bourbon.

Here’s a link to where some online drink reviwer tries to discover who made it for Costco…it seems like Jim Beam (as it tastes like Baker’s) but it may be made by the Buffalo Trace distillery. I love that one too.

And it’s under $20 a bottle…and that’s a liter bottle, not the usual 700ml!

I mean I don’t need to play around acting like I’m some sort of expert…if I like this one and it’s only $20 a bottle? I’ll buy a case next time. What’ll it do? Go bad?
Wow, that’s a whale of a deal for a decent one liter bottle of bourbon.

Alas, no liquor sales by Costco in MT.
Lucky for you you get to drive to Spokane anytime you wan to step on a plane.

Hey what are the liquor taxes in other states? It seems like they are really high in Washington state. I’m about to go to Costco right now, I’m going to check out how much gets tacked on to that Kirkland 7yr while I’m there.

I feel ripped off. This bourbon was 25 bucks at my Costco plus $8.50 in taxes.

Yikes. So a bourbon made in Kentucky sells for $20 halfway around the world and $33.50 in the same country of origin. Huh.

You might want to try and buy some liquor online. I’ve done it and it much much cheaper even with the shipping costs.
You know, I didn’t even notice it was Nards who made the post. I thought Lanky made it.

It turns out I don’t really like the Kirkland product either. It’s too spicy, and harsh for my delicate palate. I like smooth whisky. For cheap, Jamison is way smoother. For smoothness regardless of price I like Maker’s. I’ve never bought a bottle of Makers but I’d gladly pay 3 times more for Maker’s than this Kirkland stuff.

I guess that’s the reason I like Bourbon; for its kick. I understand the Kirkland brand isn’t very subtle, but I know I’ll be getting more of it next time I’m there.

I am not much of an adventerous drinker and have come to limit my choice of liquor to different whiskey variations. Wild turkey 101, Jameson, Crown, and Beam, when I’m cheap, are what I have settled on as my rotation. I do have a question for those more experienced in whiskeys, is there a solid scotch to be had for under $40? I have tried several but havent found one that wasnt harsh yet.
Laphroaig 10 year is right around $40. Very smoky, which I enjoy, and goes down easy for me. I’m no scotch expert, as I just started getting into it last year, but I have a feeling you’re going to have to go a bit more expensive to get something you would qualify as truly smooth. Lagavulin 16 is my favorite right now. Stuff goes down like water.

Is that what you want in a whiskey?

I have a bottle of Lagavulin 16 that I haven’t tried yet, and your description does not make me excited at all!

Unrelated, but come to think of it, I usually have, at any given time, 5 or so bottles of stuff I haven’t tried yet. It’s tough getting around to all of them, I hate having 10 half empty bottles so I make sure I only have a few open at one time. Plus I’ve read that when bottles are more than half empty for a long time, they tend to start to lose “something” in their flavor/character, so anything I open is usually gone within 6 months or so.

We have a place like that in the city called Village Whiskey. It’s great for sampling stuff before committing to a full bottle, but because it’s in the city, it’s a bit pricey. Still worth it, the food there is great as well.

What did you end up drinking?

Hah, perhaps a poor choice of words. I do not at all mean to imply it is flavorless, just that it goes down very smoothly and I find it very easy to drink a lot of it. If you like any of the other Islay malts I am sure you will not be disappointed.

I’m having some more right now and I have to say I was a little too quick to criticize. It tastes very good.

Well that’s nice to hear!

The funny thing is I bought a liter of Wild Turkey for about $30 and a bottle of the excellent Buffalo Trace, which is 750ml for about $35 only the week before I found this. I felt silly but not really about the price, but that I bought a little too much booze…then I thought Pffft, so what…like it’ll go bad or something?
