I have been trying to start drinking whiskey since the Tequila made my pants fall off. I can not drink it quickly so it takes much longer to get me wasted. It is harsh though. I started off easy with Crown and Diet Coke, but where else should I start to acquire the taste?
Any middle of the road ($20-25) 80 proof bourbon, neat.

And the key is not drinking it like you’re taking a shot or drinking a soda. You’re just sipping enough to coat the top of your tongue. Which over the course of several hours has a very nice effect, haha.
My problem is I dip snuff and don’t spit when I drink.

This could cause a problem
Ya nasty bastard.

Yeah, might want to not do that, haha.

If you think about it, you’re basically getting a bottle and a half worth of alcohol in the Bookers, it should definitely last longer than other bottles with its high proof.

Just thought you should factor that in to your “value” equation.
I chuckled at this. What does it say that you value your liquor based on its alcohol content?

Buy better whisky. Fuck that harsh stuff. Lanky knows way more than me about whisky but I disagree about getting a 20-25 dollar bottle. Get something in the 50 dollar range and it will likely be smoother. As matter of fact, just get Jameson. It’s smooth, easy to find and doesn’t cost a fortune.

One other thing. Have it on ice. There’s no shame in not being as manly as Push Harder.

Goonsack for ife.

NO ICE! For cryin’ out loud, NO ICE.

That’s like putting ketchup on your ribeye!
X2, I never got into the whole ice thing. I can’t taste it when it gets cold.

There are quite a few good value bottles in that range, Buffalo Trace probably being my favorite. But I acquired a whiskey taste by drinking Jack Daniel’s for years which is also in the range. I don’t drink Jack too often anymore, but I still think it’s great if one is looking to get into the hobby. A good solid baseline whiskey, IMO.

Plus, not sure what dmaddox’s financial situation is, but it can get costly buying $50 bottles just to TRY to get into them. I think establishing a taste for it first, then truly appreciating the better stuff would be the way to go.

But he also just seemed like he was looking to get bombed and be able to tolerate it, so my advice could be way off base, haha.

Finances are not an issue. I really want to actually acquire a taste for whiskey. Getting bombed is only secondary to actually enjoying it. I enjoy good tasting wines no matter what price range, but like value. I may not have an issue with finances, but getting value is a big thing for me. My co-worker loves Crown, but only mixed with diet coke. I really want to enjoy the taste. I hate Makers Mark way too harsh, but that might be that I have not acquired the taste yet.

Lanky, I will take your advice of not drinking it or doing a shot, but will sip to just coat my tongue. Maybe that will help. Another Co-worker told me to do the same thing with tequila.

And just to reiterate, start with 80 proof, no need to be a hero now.

Good luck, let us know how it goes.

Anyone here into the Islay malts? I just discovered these recently and am absolutely in love with their rich, smokey flavor. I’ve gone through a bottle each of Lagavulin 16, Laphroaig 12, and Ardbeg 10, Lagavulin being my favorite by far. I think that quote on the bottle, something like “Time takes out the fire, but leaves in the warmth” pretty accurately sums it up. Anyways, any other bottles you guys would highly recommend?

Also, try Garrison Brothers Texas bourbon if you ever stumble across it. Delicious.

I’m not a huge fan of Scotch, but Lagavulin is among my favorite Scotches.

Never heard of the Garrison Brothers, do you know if its widely distributed? I live in PA where our liquor stores are run by the state, so the selection is always terrible, but I live close enough to Jersey to visit the liquor store if something catches my fancy.

Will do and thanks for the help.

Balvenie 21 is the best scotch there is.

I just put together a list from the thread, but do not know prices, so just looking for more guidance. Let me know if I am in the ballpark and which one should I start with.

JW Black
Buffalo Trace
Bulleit Rye
12 year Redbreast
12 or 18 year Jameson
Jack Daniels original.

Good mix of bourbons/americans, irish whiskeys and scotches there. After a little sampling of each you should be able to tell which you’re more likely to gravitate towards.

My favorite value of all time, bourbon wise, is Elmer T. Lee, if you feel like adding 1 more bottle to the list. (Usually less than $30/bottle)

Start with whatever you want, at the end of the day it’s all personal preference.

Hey Lanky, just wanted to let you know I took your advice on the humidor upgrades and tips. Got me a nice cutter from Hong Cong too. Going to enjoy a Cohiba NO 2 and a glass of JD after my new tattoo on saturday afternoon. Going to need it after four hours of exquisite pain.

Back to your regular programing.
