Which Kettlebell Is Best?

I have decided to finally get a kettlebell this christmas, and while I’m excited to get one, I don’t know which to start with. I am pretty strong, and I can one-arm snatch an 80lb. dumbbell.

I am trying to decide between the 44 and the 53 lb, because I’ve heard they seem heavier than regular dumbbells. Any one who has used/owns a KB with any suggestions?

I really like my kettlestack.

check out Mike Mahler’s website. for great KB info @ www.mikemahler.com

I would go with the 53 pounder. I have the 18,24,34, and 53 and now I’m lookin at buying an 88 pounder. Freight is the killer.

I have a 36, 54 and 72. It’s tough to say which to buy, I’ve pressed the 72 and have done sets of 20 swings with it, but the 36 is pretty versatile.

I know you said 44 and 53lb, I’m just thinking out loud here.

It depends a bit on what you are using it for.

So that’s my non-answer, and they do seem heavier than a dumbbell of comparable weight.

Start with the premise that your goal will dictate the means; in this case the weight of the kettlebell. Perform Better has a sale going on with their kettlebells 25% off. Their shipping is reasonable and the kettlebell quality is good.

Pick up a regular dumbell in a similar weight that you think you’ll be using with a kettlebell and go through some of the drills that you’ll be using. Considering the kettlebell will be more akward than the dumbell, it should give you a pretty good idea on what size to start with.

Try to take into consideration how comfortable you are with some of the exercises and what kind of program you’ll be performing.

As far as where to purchase, you might want to check out the Renegade Training site. I’ve received a couple of emails regarding sales on their kettlebells and sales on shipping too.

What about these ones at
ironmind, you just load them up with plates, so it can be any weight. Is there any reason to buy standard kettlebells when these are available? I’d like to buy a pair.

The only thing about the Iron Mind ones that I don’t like is that they’re for standard plates.

I get by by using a single 2.5 standard plate at the bottom as a stop for the Olympic plates used for the rest of the weight. However, the Olympic plates flop around somewhat.

Actually there are places that sell standard-to-Olympic conversion sleeves. It would probably work to use the Iron Mind standard collars and those sleeves on top, but I haven’t done it.
