Which Handgun to Buy

Glock: G17 (Gen 3 or 4), G19 (Gen 3 or 4)

Smith & Wesson: M&P 9, M&P 9L, M&P 9C

Springfield: XD 9 Service, XD9 Tactical, XDm 9 Standard

I only got to hold the G17, G19, and XDm 9. I liked the feel of the XDm 9 and G17 the most, didn’t like the weight of the G19 so much. I’m a big guy with big hands so there’s that. The problem is the gun store I’m looking at right now is out of G17’s and I’m gonna need them soon.
Glock. And go with the G21 (.45) instead of 9mm.

Of the .45 full sizes I actually like the Glock and S&W a lot less than the XD Tac 45, and the Tac is cheaper. Grip is too bulky on the Glock and trigger is too stiff on the M&P, both problems that the XD didn’t have. I bought the Glock though because that what several of the people I went with were pushing me towards and I am still kicking myself.

Love the Glock .40 though, once you get used to the kick. Not hard just sharp and up. Just takes a little practice to get used to though.

More like tequila down here.

Our sleepy little tourist mountain town is two hours from the border, boasts a major horse race track and 3 casinos, so I’m sure they’ve cross-pollinated more than a bit.

The way they do it is walk up behind the guy on a crowded street, pop it at point blank range into the neck and up. There is not much noise, the little hole tends to be hard to find, and not much blood. He just kind of falls over and the hit man goes on his merry way before anyone figures out someone got shot.

The mob just did this again in NYC I think. It’s on video and they can’t catch the guy.

Bovine Scatology. 22LR to the brain is deadly. CCI’s 22 long’s still penetrate well and are subsonic. Ruff was referencing drug based assassinations in the SW.

Ruff’s reference went over my head.

Anything to the brain is deadly but shooting at 10 feet in a range is different than in real life with your heart pumping. a 22 has very limited stopping power.

One of the reasons I love the Glock 19 so much is the avaiability of 9mm ammo and the staggard clip that hold 17 + 1 in the chamber. Most of us without combat training or experience will resort to pray and spray if we need to actually use the gun and in that event 18 hollow tips will take down anything from a meth head to a small zombie hoard.

Count to 18 out loud. Thats how many tries you get, not to mention if you have a secondary clip loaded. This is why I dont like revolvers.
MA has a 10 round limit. Until I move I will never have that problem. I’ll only get 4 more shots from a semi than I would a revolver, so I’ll just get good with my first 6 I suppose…

I hated the .40. My old rommate had it. Finding ammo for defense and range consistantly was a big deal and the feel of it was just wrong. His was also compensated which may have led to my dislike.

NEVER buy a compensated handgun. One, the flash will blind you at night and two it will make you more visable if there are multiple attackers or you are trying to stay concealed.

I actually haven’t had that much trouble getting ammo for the .40 (I do order in bulk off the internet though). What was it that you didn’t like about it?

Also, whole heartedly agree on the compensator. I almost wrote about that when I put the pics up of the “Wanted” gun but didn’t want to be a buzzkill ha

It is much easier to get a carry permit for a revolver in MA than a semi-automatic. The law is the same, but MA is a “may issue” state, and revolvers are much more politically permitted than a semi-automatic. No idea why.

(I had a carry permit for a .357 issued in Brookline, a near impossible feat, and would have been 100% impossible with a semi. I only pulled it off because I worked security for the Shul and the Rabbi called certain people and told them they would get an oppenent in the next election that would receive 100% of the Orthodox vote if I was not approved.)

The only explination I can offer was that the .40 was awkward. If a 9mm is a rear wheel drive sports coupe, and a .45 an SUV, the .40 was a sedan or a crossover…

The only thing that really threw me about the .40 at first was the sharp upward kick of the muzzle versus the push straight backwards of the .45. This has been the most common learning curve element that I have heard from other people as well. Once you get a feel for it though it gets easier to tame.

Well, thank you, Jb.

This thread has been very interesting to read. The ‘‘gun lingo’’ sounded more like Russian at first and, I had no fucking idea what people were talking about.

After some research, things are starting to make a lil’ more sense now.

Therefore no matter how bad the tactical situation seems, right here, right now is the absolute best chance to fight back I will ever have and I intend to use it.

I will not be tied up. If the bad guy wants to tie me up, it is because he wants to do things to me that I would be able to prevent if I were not tied up. Therefore, I will resist while I am still able to do so.

I will not kneel. No one is going to execute me. If I die, I’ll die fighting.

If someone tries to take one of my children, I will fight even at the risk of my child being killed in the resultant firefight. I plan this not because I have positive assurance that I would be successful, but because I would not be able to live with myself if I simply “allowed” my child to be taken, brutalized, and his body perhaps never found. I’d rather watch him die in front of me. (Yes, that’s harsh…but given those two options and only those two, which would you choose?)

Kathy Jackson is the real deal. I think a copy of her book and one of Jeff Cooper’s Principles of Personal Defense would be an excellent starter kit for any women (or man willing to get past the pink cover of Jackson’s book, and really if we are talking about sending pieces of metal through the anatomy of someone else because it is the best availible option than men damn well better be able to get past it) looking to get their mind right about self defense.

I appologize to the OP for the thread drift but the murder of Amy Lord in Boston and particularly the shot of her at 1:30 in the video brought this to mind.

Tell the people that matter in your life to never get in the car.

If they don’t think they have it in them to fight, tell them how badly it would hurt you to lose them. And ask them to save you from that pain.

Tell them to never go quietly.

Tell them that they can and should fight like they are the third fucking monkey on the ramp to Noah’s Arc.

I was watching Pawn Stars or some other shitty show and the guy saw a gun and said it was breathtaking.

I carry a S&W snub nose .38 every day. Easy to conceal. Reliable. Plenty powerful to get a beotch up out of my business. I have a Glock 23 .40 at home beside my bed. It leaves the house with me every now and then but it’s real job is to buy me time to get to my bedroom closet where my shotguns are located. I don’t like anything with a safety because that is one additional step to remember in a split second of amped up time.

I know it isn’t on your short list, but my everyday piece is a Ruger SR-9. I picked it up cheap and it has been completely reliable after a few thousand of my cast handloads. It isn’t the easiest to conceal since the grip frame is a tad longer than normal. I chew the X ring out at 15 yards pretty routinely and the way it points makes for some really nice double taps.

My first post on a strength training site is about guns… I need to go squat something.
