Whey Replacement?

A few questions: I’m lactose intolerant and my stomach gets awful cramping if I have any WHEY protein drinks. I can handle other dairy products okay, though (milk, cottage cheese, yogurt, etc.) In scrawny to brawny Berardi recommends WHEY protein in the workout phase because it’s very fast digesting. What would you recommend in my case as a replacement? (Even if I use Lactaid tablets, my stomach gets awful cramps from WHEY drinks.) One person I spoke to recommended rice protein drinks. What are your thoughts about them?

Also, I have a very sensitive stomach and I’ve read that putting protein in your workout drink for the pre- and during workout phases can cause gastro-intestinal distress. Is this the case or not? I know Berardi recommends protein before and during (not just post) workouts.

I don’t know if you need any info. about me to answer these questions, but I’ll provide it anyway. My workouts and eating follow the S2B book’s advice. I’m a newbie and an ectomorph who’s trying to put on as much lean mass as possible. I’m 5’5", 125, with 6.0% BF.

Thanks for your help!

Maybe you have a sensitive stomach cuz you never eat anything.

Also, you know your BF % to one decimal place. I’m gonna go break something now.

I eat 3500 calories a day and have been gaining weight. I’m trying!
Do you have anything helpful to add on the topic of a fast digesting protein to replace whey with?

If you’re lactose intolerant, then the whey protein is not the problem, the lactose mixed in the protein you are having is.

Isopure has very quality protein, and they advertise no lactose content, which means it should be fine for you.

Someone correct me if I am wrong, but I am inclined to believe that Surge would work in this situation as well, as I don’t think it has any lactose in it either.

Whey protein isolate is lactose free.

Yeah I was being an ass. I’d say buy some Surge or if you can’t afford it (that shit’s expensive) drink chocolate milk. Also check if whey isolate works like the other guys said.

BCAA’s would be fast digesting.

Most of them, in my experience, aren’t.

I’m lactose intolerant and I have not had a problem consuming Metabolic Drive or Surge. Try a different protein. Cheap ones seem to have a greater lactose concentration.

Thanks for all the advice. I’ll do some trial and error until I find something that works.

Whey Protein Isolates are the highest grade of Whey Protein. They contain virtually no lactose or cholesterol.

if your getting ‘lactose intolerance’ effects from WPI’s, then you are either the only person on the planet who responds to a miniscule quantity of lactose (Ion exchange will have 0.2g/100g, microfiltered will be a tad higher - typically the level of response would be something like 10grams) or you have symptoms caused by something else in the product, not the lactose

Drink milk before during and after your workout and you’ll bulk up no problem.

Yeah, I guess it’s not the lactose. I bought 100% lactose free whey powder and tried it today after working out and my stomach’s awful. It’s probably something else that’s in all whey drinks or at least all that I’ve tried.

Get 100% Ion Exchange Whey Protein. It’s more spendy, but you shouldn’t have any stomach problems with it. Just weigh what is more important to you.

There should be zero carbs in it and lactose free if I’m not mistaken.

Ion-exchange whey does contain a little lactose. Cross-flow microfiltered whey, which I believe is used in Biotest products, is a better choice.

Could be an issue with the protein and not the sugar. Serrano, Berardi, Poliquin and others have spoke of protein allergies. I developed an issue with protein powders after being fine with them for years.
Anyway, as mentioned above pre/post workout I use bcaa’s and even free form aminos. I love them. better than powders in the pre post situation and food is better every other time imho.

You should by a whey isolate from allthewhey.com.

True… I’ve tried other whey powders in the past and would have, excuse me, gas and bloating.

Biotest Whey causes no problems for me… I’m on my second tub.
