I’ve stopped taking whey protein because it was giving me stomach cramps, but I’ve found that I’m getting a lot more sore after workouts so it must be having a negative effect on my recovery capacity. I could take leucine, maltodextrin and/or BCAAs pre and post workout, but I’m not really familiar with BCAAs or leucine or how to best use them or the maltodextrin without whey protein. Any tips?
Try different protein brands - what were you using before?
You could up your food protein intake - after all that’s what you are supplementing a lack of with whey.
BCAA’s and malto will help - take 5-10g BCAAs before and 5-10g BCAAs with 40g malto after.

The most recent ones were from myprotein.co.uk, isolate whey and milk isolate as a test to see if I’d feel better without the lactose. It didn’t help much, but before that I was taking myprotein instant milk protein and Holland and Barrett whey protein. To be honest, I’m not 100% sure which ones caused stomach cramps and bad skin or if it was just proteins derived from milk in general, but I’m doing better now that I’ve stopped taking them all.
I’ll follow your advice about the malto and BCAAs for now, maybe I’ll reintroduce whey protein on it’s own after a while as it might be OK if I’ve had a break and I don’t start taking daily milk protein as well.
I also get the trots from the MPMax proteins from them - it may be down to the lactose so I can only use those in the morning otherwise my workouts suck because I can’t push to hard or else…
It may be an idea to see if you can get samples of different powders to test which ones work for you, or try adding fibre or lactaid to prevent side-effects.
I know this isn’t too relevant, but on the topic of intestinal discomfort; has Protein done more than just give cramps and runs to people? I’ve unfortunately developed Gull Bladder sludge, and I’m not sure if Protein use over an extended period of time would do this to you?
Gall bladder sludge?
It’s similar to Gall stones: the doc’s were trying to tell me it was my protein.

Sounds sketchy. Bile is used to break down lipids, not protein.
Well, your words are better than mine: I’m confused and have to wait a couple of days for another ultra-sound.
OP If you have £££ try some Surge Recovery. I haven’t know ANYONE who had a problem with it.
Drink milk.
or
Chocolate milk if you can afford the carbs in your diet.

Suitable for Pre-workout (as energy) but not nutition-wise.
Chocolate milk or Milk is a great one too, as already mentioned.
I have a gluten intolerance which apparently can cause people to have problems digesting milk. Nice to finally know what’s wrong. I’ll probably start taking whey again in a week or 2, the extra protein might even help repair the damage that the gluten did.
How about a can of tuna and a glass of orange juice?
Also, let me know, if miraculously, you’re gains or maintenance of muscle and performance come to a halt at all by not using miracle supplements.
1 Cups Liquid Egg Whites + 2 Cups Fat Free Chocolate Milk.
If you can afford it, Surge Recovery is pretty gentle on the stomach. I’m severely Lactose Intolerant and I don’t have any discomfort from Surge. The hydrolyzed protein is ‘partially digested’ and I think that makes it a lot easier on your GI system. You could try that! It’s delicious too.
Chicken breast and white potato?
I seriously have noticed no difference in recovery or lbm gain with whole food pwo. It’s a lot cheaper too. Shsss…Don’t tell the supplement companies that
I use MAximuscle Promax. Seems to work really well, and is lactose free.
