Anybody know why it is that I cannot find a whey protein for post workout that I can digest? I have tried several brands and they I get the same side effects from them all:nausea, diharrea. I know that when I was younger I had a lactose intolerancy to milk, cheese, etc but grew out of it as I got older. Could this be the problem again with whey protein?
If so does anyone know what other products I could use for post workout protein, or what other solutions there are? Any help would be great.
Try using Hemp protein.
It worked for a buddy of mine that has a very sensitive GI system. He has trouble with lactose and gluten. Whey and casein were a bad experience for him.
Hemp protein seems to work well though. Its pretty cheap and has some other benefits as well.
I think he actually gets his off of amazon.
I might be tempted to go strictly amino acid complexes also.
interesting… I’m lactose intolerant and Metabolic Drive has caused me huge problems. Strangely enough, Surge doesn’t.
If you’re looking for plain whey, I believe Dymatize includes lactase in their powder; check it out. If you’re looking specifically for something pre/post workout, I’d very highly recommend Surge.
…there’s always the option of buying lactase as a digestive aid; that way shouldn’t matter what kind of whey you buy.
You guy are forgetting that some are lactose-intolerant and some are SEVERELY intolerant, while others with GI issues have a different problem:
Whey and casein are hard on the gut. It has nothing to do with lactose.
Also, it is almost impossible to purify the powder entirely of lactose. Those that are lactose-intolerant and DON"T have problems might just be intolerant to a lesser degree than others.
i’m lactose intolerant and have problems with all whey or casein proteins (they are, after all, milk proteins).
the solution for me is to take Lactase Enzyme before a shake. buy the PURE enzyme, not some fancy version (such as Lactaid pill, which doesn’t work for me). i buy the pure enzyme at the Vitamin Shoppe.
take one pill and then a shake. if you get sick, next time take two pills and then a shake. all the pill is is enzymes, so there is no real risk of overdosing. just take as many as you need so that your stomach has the necessary amount of enzyme to digest the lactose!

When I read threads like these, I can’t help but think it has nothing to do with being lactose intolerant, and more to do with having a problem with the actual protein.
Most protein powders state on the supplement label zero sugars to two grams tops. Lactose is a sugar. I highly doubt this would be enough to cause problems for a lactose intolerant individual.
What most of you are probably experiencing is some form of milk allergy, which is caused by an immune reaction to the protein itself (casein, whey, or both).
Just went through one of the worst 2 hour periods of my life after trying out lactaid with EAS protein, so I guess lactaid isnt the answer…
I think I will try egg protein when I get back to a place it can be bought.

KT,
I just had to chime in here b/c you’ve hit it nicely - many people who think they are “lactose intolerant” aren’t. They cant tolerate protein derived from cow’s milk, whether it has lactose in it or not. For those folks, egg, hemp, and buckwheat protein are all good alternatives.
I guess you’re not lactose intolerant, you’re allergic to milk protein.
In good whey supplement lactose is found in trace amount, usually not enough to trigger any side effect. Lactose intolerance is not an allergic reaction, it’s just the symptom of the inability of the body to digest lactose because you don’t produce lactase or at least not enough.
In the other hand an allergic reaction can be triggered by a trace amount of protein, it’s far more serious.

Agree. Lots of people confuse lactose intolerance, a non-allergic issue, and protein allergy.
