I am 15, and overweight, well I dont look that fat but I feel I am and know it too. I am extremely tall for my age; 6,3 (193cm) and I weigh 280lbs. (130kg). I have decided to go on a dieting program tomorrow and I have bought a membership to the gym close to my house. I plan to be doing a lot of cardio with various muscle building routines.
I feel that the diet I have planned for myself does not have a sufficient amount of protein in it. My question is: Is it safe for a 15 year old of my height and weight to take 100% natural whey protein ?
If this is safe, would one of you please be so kind and tell me how much I should be taking and with what.
Hmm… Safe for a 15 year old kid, sure. I’m sure that is what a 15 year old kid needs to be taking though.
If you check out the Store link in the upper left hand corner of the screen (or along the right side of the page if on the new site) you will see they sell whey protein in there.
Here is how I would recommend you use the whey. First of all, get a good diet plan going. There are plenty on this website (T-Dawg 2.0 comes to mind. Get a good workout plan going (I would recommend you check out Chad Waterbury and Alwyn Cosgrove in Authors Section)
Then pick one meal a day (breakfast maybe) and replace it with 2 scoops of whey and some Flax Meal mixed in and some fish oil caps. The other meals just eat sensibly… source of protein and some veggies. Maybe some good carbs (wheat bread, yams, oatmeal…)
At your age, food is really important and short changing yourself isnt gonna be good. You may want to look at Surge (which is protein and carbs) for after workout as well. Your whey drink may serve this purpose as well until you get out of high school and can structure your own eating plan better.
I would say you need to tighten up the diet first. Personally at 15 I don’t think you should be start playing with macronutrients yet. My advice for you is to get a solid diet. Wake up and have some oatmeal and/or eggs and a piece of fruit. Then eat 5 more times during the day. small meals, each with a protein source and a veggie. (precision nutrition kind of principals)
Save the whey for during/after you workout (2 scoops should be around 40gs or so).
I was 6’ 240lbs at 13 and new nothing about health so I took a 1500cal diet and ran my azz off. went into HS at 15 6’4" 180 and skinny fat. And it was a pain trying to fix my metabolism. Learn from my mistake, your 15 and still growing, just eat 6 small meals and eat enough.
As long as you are working out (Lonnie suggested some great authors workouts to choose, I personally love Waterbury’s stuff and would say pick up “muscle revolution” I made some great gains with it), and eating nutrient dense foods (nothing from a box. Go for meats, eggs, milk, nuts, and fresh fruits and veggies) you will make good gains, lose some weight and grow some more.
So that was a long way of saying yes whey protein is safe and healthy for you. Its fast acting so good in the morning like Lonnie said or post workout, but at you age try to dial in the diet and worry about supplements when you get older and have a job to pay for them.

Whey protein is in milk. Nothing dangerous whatsoever, unless you take a ton of scoops per day (can cause liver damage if you use ridiculous amounts).
You sure about that liver damage?? They’ve done studies that prove that in those with healthy livers (read…not in renal failure) that a high protein diet had no ill effects.

“Renal” refers to the kidneys. Neither of you guys have a clue what you are talking about, lol.
To the OP, whey is totally safe no matter what your age is.
Thank you a lot for spending time on your responses to my question, it is highly appreciated. I will follow the things you said. I’ll take 2 scoops of protein after workout then?

Ha… Didnt even notice that. Its just that usually all the talk is on kidney damage, so when I read liver (and typed it) I just made that mental switch to kidney since thats all anyone says.

Good catch, I’ll be more on the ball next time.
Everyone dropped the ball that stuff will kill you, it screws your kidneys, your liver, and all your other organs. I don’t have any studies to prove it, but its true.
Not to mention I was told the other day by a co-worker who, ironically was eating wendy’s at the time, that my protein shake would make me go crazy and screw with my natural testosterone production and I need to eat real food without steroids in it!!! (True story-thats what I get for drinking a shake on my way out of work so I can stop at the gym on the way home I guess tho, a lot of ignorance).
***In case anyone didn’t pick it sarcasm, yes protein is absolutely safe. I just find it funny how people perpetuate myths without common sense or science.
