I’ve never said I avoided arms completely, they still get worked with weighted dips, chin-ups, close grip bench, rows, etc. I just stay away from shit like curls and push downs
I know of no strong person who trains their arms in this manner. The people I do know who train their arms in this manner tend to be weak.
Who do you know that is training in this manner that is meeting the goals you had set out for yourself?
Do you mean how much less would I squat, or deadlift, or total movements I’d perform, or something else? I don’t quite understand your question.
My lower body day is a deadlift, a squat, and in between reverse hyper and ab work. Upper body work is normally 5-6 movements total.
I used to think close grip benches were best for triceps. More weight, more effectiveness.
Then I saw that they guy who benched the most ever does 1 arm tricep Pushdowns on the cable.
For the assistance on lower body day, yeah, total movements. You deadlift and squat. But if you were to just deadlift, would you be sure to do something for quads? If you were to just squat, would you be sure to do something for hamstrings?
Well I’m still a beginner so I don’t think it matters and there’s plenty of strong people who train like this, take weightlifters for example
Could you name one of these weightlifters that performs no direct arm work?
pretty sure you’re getting trolled, dude.
I am having my own fun, haha.
Donny shankle, I’ve never heard of direct arm work being important other than someone just wanting to have better looking arms
Them you need to read more or listen more.
but yet there’s a bunch of people bigger and stronger you in this thread saying to do it.
But you’ve got it all figured out, it seems. Best of luck with it all
There we go, excellent. I would advise you go train like Donny Shankle if you want to be like him.
Consequently, I don’t think he ever did Starting Strength.
That having been said, in regards to doing curls only for better looking arms.
Keep in mind, Bill was literally so strong that he was uninvited to the World’s Strongest Man for 5 years in order to give the other competitors a chance.
Although I’m very sure Donny Shankle didn’t train in any way near the OP or the internet claims he trained, let’s apply internet logic here.
Donny Shankle = Juice monkey
OP = Natural
Donny Shankle didn’t do arm work. Hence, OP, you MUST do arm work because internet wisdom dictates that a natural cannot do the same training as a juice monkey.
Suck it up and eat your vegetables, kid.
I meant to post this as well, but here is another great example of an insanely strong person curling in order to get more insanely strong.
Derek Poundstone hitting some Poundstone Curls
Derek doesn’t have as cool a mythos around him as Bill, but he is still one of the strongest humans to have ever walked the planet.
And, based on your goals, I feel like Bill and Derek are actually more like what you want to be than Donny Shankle is. Don’t get me wrong; Donny is no slouch, but he doesn’t do the things you said you wanted to be able to do.
na, but, he’s a beginner so he’s better off doing chins
Exactly, and direct arm work isn’t mandatory to get big numbers. The best assistance to bench is more bench, press, pull-ups, push-ups, dips, and rows. Where the fuck is curls and skullcrushers?
Why start a thread asking for advice then presume you know more than the people whom you’ve asked?
No one actually answered the thread and most of what I know is either from rippetoe or wendler. I mainly lean to rippetoes teachings cause the guy is a genius from experience and from knowing the anatomy of the body with handling weights.
well good luck with it all. You’ve clearly got it all figured out. You’re totally right to ignore all the guys way bigger, stronger and more experienced than you.
Oh just give it some time and I’ll pass them up, I got the heart of a lion
