What will it take for a “White” guy to win the 100 meters? What new training methods are out there for sprinters?

As you would know, Borzov of the CCCP did so just a few decades ago. There are lots of issues here. I don’t want to go into a whole “racial” thing, but you opened the doors a bit.

First and foremost, “White” athletes have advantages/disadvantages, yet in the speed events seem to miss the boat. Fifty years ago, there were a lot of fast national level white sprinters. There were also a lot of very muscular 155 pound white guys who did four sports and manual labor.

I would argue, simply, that in the Americas, a good white athlete is often beaten by his parents into a single sport. They take a square peg and put it in a round hole. To be a great sprinter, I would still argue that you want an excellent strength to weight ratio and you are not going to get this for a kid who…for God’s sake…jogs for cardio.

Every time a well meaning coach or parent warms their kid up with a job, some stretching exercises then a carb drink, two candy bars, and a “reward” of a pizza and soft drinks after is driving the kid to tears on Oprah.

Bottom line: there are lots and lots of great “white” athletes being overcarbed, overjogged, overcamped, overtrained, overspecialized, and totally weiniefied out of top end speed. If you decide to make your kid fast and put him on a machine for curls and kickbacks, you bleed the speed out of them. Top end speed is a lean, mean fighting machine.

Charlie Francis would know more about this…I’m just guessing…

*********** Your reply is much appreciated. I was told (by Ben Tabachnick) that in the USSR after 1972 the training programs for sprinters decreased in “quality” and the emphasis became anabolic steroids. I wonder if the USSR were still intact that research would not have produced another Borzov?

If you were recommending 4 or 5 sports to a young athletic (rugby playing is his forte) 9 year old, what would you say.

I know your answer will probably be all sports, but every child has a limited amount of time.

I was thinking Hurling (a stick sport similar to Lacrosse or Shinty), Rugby obviously, Olympic Weightlifting (theres a club in his town), let him be involved in another track and field sport he actually likes the triple jump. What else would you recommend i.e if you were training a 9 year old (nearly 10) what would you have him involved in. I was also thinking a Crossfit approach may be ideal for him.

Perhaps the internet connectOR is weird and the connection is indeed ok?

Re: … at least 8 hours of sleep per day.

A thread got started elsewhere on sleep minimums, optimums, and maximums, and then I remembered your 8 hour rule.

So, how much sleep do you actually get? Between the family, the jobs, the training, and your utter domination of the Highland Games, when do you sleep? How many hours are in a Utah day?

Thanks,
Bastard

My brother is correct in “lean, fighting machine” is needed to speed. I coached hurdlers, sprinters and jumpers and I found that upper body strength and leg strength were extremely important. I required my athletes(boys and girls) to do pull ups and dips on the bar set up we had near the track. I found that upper body strength kept the torso up and the arms strong to maintain good posture. Leg strength came from stair climbs and plain old running.

To go fast, the leg has to lift and swing forward. The better you lift, drive and all the other factors, the further and faster the foot hits the ground. I totally concur with Dan to go fast, strength is a factor.

Dan that internet problem is because you are the creative one in the family not the one who likes to rebuild toys after they are broken by brothers.

Took the kids to the beach last Friday. Found lots of rocks to carry and throw around. Interesting 20min workout. Next time I’ll have to bring some home.

I just noticed this…welcome to the T-Nation, Richard.

Be careful of some of the people in here, though. They are not all like me. Some are normal.
