I’m going snowshoeing today and that’s something EVERYONE can benefit from. For one thing it’s good cardio and endurance training, and for another it increases cold-hardiness! There’s really no excuse for NOT doing it.
Cross Country Fly Flingin! Whats not to like? You cover way more ground, become peaceful, serene, and healthy!
Actually, that weekend sounds familiar. A couple friends of mine produce pink blanks specifically for that purpose, but not necessarily (I don’t know the specifics) that event.
I don’t blame you. There’s a lot to get into with the whole thing. What kind of fly, where, when, not sticking one into your ear trying to cast, it goes on and on.
My only real joy in it comes from tricking a fish into eating something that I made out of dryer lint and some feathers I wrangled off of the cat the last time she caught a bird. Then I’m like “Ha! Stupid Fish! Why would you eat that?!?”.
Actually, I think it may be the same one - I feel like I recall her being in your neck of the woods (by which I mean a 500 mile radius) recently (by which I mean within the last couple of years). She goes all over, though, so who knows.
Could be. Its a pretty tight community. There are a lot of places through the middle of the state that host events like that. I’ve gotten involved in some charity stuff for veterans but stay relatively local. My friends do a lot of the travel and are more deeply involved in the social aspects of it.
I look at hobbies and special interests as very personal experiences, and know that what it means or does for me is probably very different than what it is for someone else. My buddy laughs because I end up spending half the time finding mushrooms and bobcat dens and bear tracks and everything else. He’s like “I got I nice one!” and I’m half way up a hill going “oh Look! Bear Poop!”
That’s because you’ve never gone fishing with guns before. Nothing compares to watching a carp float to the surface after you and your buddies indiscriminately fired your entire magazines into the water.
Oh! I’ve been snowboarding down there a few times.
All kinds of crazy stories from there, including finding out that my old snow boarding buddy and his family were nudists, and a top heavy dude named Meatball that tried to make it through a mogul field at terminal velocity!
I used to be like you… Then I got older and shit started to hurt. I understand where she’s coming from. I push through, but most people aren’t wired like that. I have been at it 25 years. Someone who hasn’t been in the game and been addicted to it, will not get it. They will never get it. Nothing you can do or say will make them get it.
When people ask, I defer now a days. I used to be full of advice, only to see exactly zero percent of people who ask, actually do it.
I just tell folks move as much as you can… ‘Walk, run, bike, what ever floats your boat.’
When I say that everyone should exercise, I’m speaking objectively. There’s a lot of things that everyone should do that few people do, and there will always be niche groups who push their “agendas,” if you will. For example: I don’t meditate, but I’m sure there is a meditation forum somewhere out there where I’d be lectured on how incredibly healthy and beneficial it is by people who find some sort of emotional/spiritual/physical release from meditating.
Also, after re-reading what I said before, I’m not worried about our status internationally. We’ve accomplished far too much as a nation in the last century for me to care that citizens of other countries make fun of us for our obesity rates.
