Three weeks would have been enough back in early March had it been a coordinated action. Each delay meant more cumulative economic damage.
Piecemeal shutdowns lead to piecemeal results.
Let’s be brutally honest here.
Politicians know that 99% of the time, they’re useless POS, and nobody listens to their hot air. Now, politicians fancy themselves “saving lives”, and being “on the front lines” because of the pandemic. They’re equivalent to “doctors”, and actual “warriors”.
These shithead politicos like Cuomo are going to hang on to that inflated, false sense of self-importance as long as they can.
#Rant
My research indicates The Rona can even cause health problems years before it shows up. It’s unbeatable.
That may very well be true. Half-assing doesn’t tend to produce great results. We should either go fully free, or completely submit. (NOT sarcasm)
When people start getting into arguments about it all being a huge Governmental power grab, out to take away Constitutional rights…it really is no longer a discussion for me, @pat.
Sorry.
Face diapers forever.
I’m not advocating for unlimited lockdowns or restrictions. Most of what is hurting the economy right now is the virus. You can open everything up in the world and doesn’t mean everyone is going to behave as they did before. What would do that? Vastly lower case numbers and deaths.
Instead we have dumbasses freaking out about masks.
What if (crazy thinking here perhaps) we all took steps to do what we can to limit the spread of this? To naturally lower cases by mimicking what other countries have done?
Instead we have everyone running around saying I won’t be listening to the medical majority on this. You can’t make me wait back in line a bit. I won’t put something on my face for 2 minutes at the gas station!
This is my feeling also.
The GDP of “Live free and die alone” Sweden contracted 8,6% in Q2 of 2020. Not as bad as France, Italy or Spain or EU awerage but equal to Nordic neighbors or even worse than locked down Baltic states and locked down obligatory mask wearing Czech Republic, and all that for a much, much higher death rate per capita.
It’s a false dichotomy. One has to defeat the virus.
I never said it wasn’t. I was responding only to Chris’s part of the post that said the virus already peaked in Canada, the underlying assumption seemed to be it can’t peak again. He clarified.
I said I agreed with his general point.
You want to take a guess what the drop in the US was?
Respectfully sir, I disagree
all other states initially had similar restrictions. Said restrictions have been lifted. If these restrictions were to stay for longer than 6-8 weeks there would be riots in the streets.
Don’t be so paranoid, not everyone is out to get us
.
Me and you have gone over this a few times, we are more or less on the same page. The main thing is that there needs to be some sort of exit strategy because there really are people and governments advocating for unlimited lockdowns and restrictions for years to come. Yeah you don’t want everyone getting sick at the same time, but if it happens gradually (rather than trying to stop the spread altogether, which doesn’t seem possible) then this will be over sooner and I’m quite sure will have the best outcome overall.
As for what is hurting the economy most, it all depends where. Some places never had more than a few cases.
But how? Now these brilliant experts who couldn’t make up their minds on whether or not we should wear masks are saying even with a vaccine the restrictions will continue for at least 2-3 more years. This is going to be a long fucking thread, but it looks like Sweden’s approach (aside from the outbreaks in nursing homes) is the only reasonable way to go. Anything else is going to drag on for years and years unless the virus spontaneously dies off at some point.
You had me wondering, it’s 32.9% in the last quarter. That’s crazy, the US is fucked. This makes Sweden look better than ever.
And whose economic performance is on par with the Czech republic who has roughly the same population, locked down early and has 13x less dead.
Call me a snowflake, but I believe those 5300 additional deaths in Sweden should matter.
If you’ve failed to implement an early lockdown, then wear a fucking mask.
Quickly isolate and quash local outbreaks and screen international passengers.
It’s not that hard, it’s been done from 14th century onwards, hence the concept of quarantine.
But how many will end up dying in Czech Republic by the time this is over, and how many will suffer due to issues related to the lockdown?
They are doing that in many places but the virus is nowhere near “defeated”. It’s going to take several more years at best according to the experts.
And how many in Sweden?
FYI, the Czechs lifted their lockdown three months ago, they’re out and about.
Then maybe Czech Republic isn’t the right place to use an example. Elsewhere we are looking at endless restrictions, shutting down multiple times, and basically enacting martial law in the case of Australia. There is a time and place for certain things to be done, if one strategy doesn’t work then something else needs to happen. In the case of Canada for one, we flattened the proverbial curve but now that’s not enough and the bullshit will continue until the government decides it’s enough, with no objective goals or measures spoken of to determine that.
Yeah, but no one goes through life perfectly normally then experiences one hard time and goes “Oh well. Time to break out the heroin.”.
Drug abuse and addiction don’t work like that. Those Are the people on the margins and edges.
And for offing themselves, same thing. I’m putting my life back together after losing a shit ton, including my ability to make a living after a severe heart attack last June before any of this other crap happened. And believe me, offing myself was absolutely an option. But when pushh comes to shove, I shove back harder. If I’m going to die, I’m going to die trying. Not “Well, lost the farm, time to eat a gun.
”.
If someone knows they are in jeopardy of self harm, they need to ask for help. If one hard time puts them over the edge, they already needed help.
I agree. I’m not sure who is advocating for for unlimited lockdowns and restrictions for years to come. Maybe some have said that if we never get a handle on it I have no idea. We haven’t had anything that I would consider a true lockdown ever and most places are open with restrictions and have been for quite some time. To me it doesn’t make sense to take those off the table when we are by far the nation struggling with this the most. And those places that did rush back to normal for the sake of the economy backtracked when shit hit the fan.
I think the virus hurting the economy here is clearly the issue. I don’t care if they open everything that was open last year at this time with no restrictions. A lot of people aren’t going to crowded concerts, movie theaters, etc. At least certainly not at a comparable level. If we had the success other countries have had I have no doubt we would be in a much better economic situation by far with way less restrictions.
But we are a country that has been willfully ignorant and defiant of it and our results reflect that. You can’t have the President and many citizens downplaying and saying no big deal we’re not making any lifestyle changes and expect us to have the same success as countries that didn’t do what we did.
We have a much different situation than many countries and a lot of this comes from our shit leadership and the numerous citizens who insist they should have the freedom to be dipshits and wear it like a badge of honor.
Its literally happening mufasa this isn’t a joke or a conspiracy. Look at LA, any unapproved large gathering will have the power and water cut.
This is a violation of the 1st amendment.
It’s not only my rights I am fighting for, it’s yours too.
You are operating under the false assumption that ‘it can’t happen here’. Authoritarianism, communism, socialism.
Well it’s happening here and at an even faster rate than it happened in Russia. If you are going to be blind just don’t be so willingly.
The nuance of ‘both sides do it equally’ no longer washes because it’s not true.
