When Does a "Fake" Pandemic Become "Real"?

Either. I don’t dismiss the consequences of staying in lockdown either. Eventually, sooner than later it just becomes too draconian. Wearing masks though? Hope they help. Wash them hands. Hope the vaccine can pretty much make it a non-issue. Hopefully.

I don’t doubt that masks are effective to some degree, but the virus was under control here without mandatory masks so it’s not like it’s the only way. Also, if this bullshit is going to continue indefinitely then it would be better if healthy non-elderly people gradually got infected so that we would have herd immunity and this would end, masks are going to prolong the situation. As for the argument that herd immunity might not be possible, if that’s the case then you can’t expect a vaccine to work either so we just have to accept that there is a virus and life expectancy might be a bit shorter now and get on with our lives. There isn’t much else you can do.

It’s better to die standing than to live life on your knees.

This is a reasonable take IMO.

Well, in my area they are open for a couple of weeks before election day. They can open them now as far as I am concerned.
And personally I am not affronted by mail-in voting so long as in-person voting is still an option. In Nevada, they are trying to mandate only mail-in voting. That’s a problem. Giving more options is ok, less is bad.

It’s been 5 months already, 5! How long do you suggest we stay locked up?
I am lucky that my state is about 90% open. I can go to the gym, can you? 5 months. 5 fucking months, unless you are attending a BLM riot, you have to stay home?
How the hell does that make any sense on any level at all?

New Yorkers I have interacted with swear never to go back… It’s anecdotal, but I doubt they are unique.

The death rate is 0.26% overall. If they receive proper care it’s higher? Where did you get that number?

I got mine here:

Then they should open up. The government is restricting civil rights. That should be alarming if even for one second.
What’s the guarantee that the restrictions will ever be lifted. All it takes is the government to say that since people were able to live with them for X time, why not make it permanent, it’s our health after all!

what are you even talking about? If everyone gets sick at the same time, the hospitals will become overwhelmed and folks will not recieve the proper care which will cause the liklihood of fatal infections to rise from the 0.6% that the other poster quoted as the current liklihood of a fatal infection.

They can, they have and they do. At no point before were civil liberties restricted because getting sick isn’t a good thing.
The plain simple fact is that this wasn’t the nuclear bomb we were told it was going to be. It’s here to stay, we cannot hide forever.

When the AIDS epidemic hit, there weren’t any lock downs. There was no rubber wearing requirement when you left the house. Extra-marital affairs were not outlawed and at the time the death rate from AIDS was 100%.

It’s a lot easier to recover a disease than it is to take ill gotten power back away from the government. The latter concerns me far more.

It’s not 0.6 it’s 0.26.

Terrible analogy with the AIDS epidemic, @pat.

First; it was confined to distinct populations that many felt “got what they deserved”…(until it wasn’t).

By the time it was obvious that there was heterosexual spread (with or without needle sharing); AND perinatal spread; it was apparent not only was it still somewhat difficult to transmit; it often was during activities that 1) many people were not involved with AND/OR 2) again, involved individuals people still felt “got what they deserved”. (e.g. drug use, sharing needles, unprotected homo- and heterosexual sex).

When respiratory induced Pandemics have resulted, there have been restrictions imposed. I will repeat again:

  1. Some things we have, and are doing RIGHT.

  2. Some things we have done WRONG.

  3. Some things we continue to do WRONG despite mounting evidence.

  4. Some things have been FUBAR from the beginning.

The WORST thing we have done so far?

Politicized the whole thing.

Yeah this is where the “the death count is low yo” people lose me. We have a growing body of evidence that Covid could have major health implications for those that get it. We likely won’t know or understand the specifics for a long time but right now we can’t just say if it doesn’t kill you no big deal.

The death rate plus the potential long term implication for survivors plus the incredible ability of it to spread…and we still have people who refuse to social distance or wear a mask. Two incredibly easy things almost everyone can do.

I’m in NYS. Governor Cuomo announced today that gyms are closed indefinitely and eviction moratorium is extended until HE declares “covid-19 pandemic is over”. WTF?

Naturally I disagree. AIDS is a communicable disease that at one point had 100% lethality among those who got it. It was called a national health crisis. There WAS fear at one point it could mutate and become airborne.
And if you do not like this example, that’s ok. Just show me one example of a pandemic shutting down the economy and the government restrict Constitutionally guaranteed civil liberties. Use any example you like.

Your list is very vague and it covers everything, but it’s not illuminating to say ‘somethings are right and somethings are wrong’.
This is a power struggle against those who would take power and those who want their liberty back.
We must be on the side of liberty or we will lose it. We’ve already lost too much.
For example, they have shuttered churches in NYC for 5 months. How hard would it be just to make it permanent? Way easier than you think.

History shows any progression towards authoritarianism ends up in either conflict or authoritarianism. I don’t want it to go that far, but I fear we already may be too late. We should have never taken ‘lock downs’ lying down. It’s a dangerous precedent all to easy to maintain and repeat.

So stop paying rent and get to live in your place for free indefinitely, 2-3 years or more. What happens when the landlord goes broke? Sounds like the beginning of a communist revolution.

You have to weigh the risks on both sides, the lockdowns and restrictions are causing a lot of shit and that isn’t near its peak yet.

What’s the endgame then? A vaccine? What if one is never developed? The whole thing is waaaaay beyond insanity at this point.

This is what I was talking about a couple days ago, the Canadian government assholes are saying that even with a vaccine the restrictions will have to stay in place for at least 2-3 more years.

See this:

Patients succumbing to COVID-19 in Scotland have an average age older than the age at which people pass away normally, numbers show.

But it’s the end of the world as we know it!

The data adds to growing evidence showing the virus strikes the elderly, while schoolchildren are more at risk of being hit by lightning than falling victim to COVID-19.

Next, ban going outside when it’s cloudy or raining.

When even the mainstream news in a place like Canada starts telling you it’s bullshit, it’s definitely fucking bullshit.
