I thought I was 13-14% on the left and spot on like you said 16% on the right with muscle loss. I should be fine in a month or two tho thanks for the input.
It’s a water issue. Certain athletes will cut water to “make weight” and then rehydrate via intravenous methods. Obviously this can affect various methods of measuring actual body fat percentage.

I agree,I still don’t think it’s many if any NBA players under 10% bodyfat
Well, of course it doesn’t really matter what BF% they are (or anyone, for that matter). My point is that the whole “look at the veins in their abs or striations in their muscles” is just not an accurate indicator. Consider again an athlete cutting short term for a weigh in - they lose 10 lbs very quickly (of water weight/glycogen) and they look leaner and more defined but their BF % actually went up (as they didn’t lose fat, so those fat lbs are now a higher percentage of their lower bodyweight).
After the short term cut, they put on 10-20 pounds back of water/glycogen and the look less defined and veiny, but their bodyfat % goes down (again, same amount of fat in lbs, but now a lesser percentage due to their higher body weight). So I don’t think this visual thing of guessing body fat % is of any use at all for someone who trains/is athletic. Sure, you can tell a big fat dude has more body fat than Conor McGregor, but these details of “he’s 10-12, not 7-8” are not at all accurate from your visual guesses.
This is true but again certain things you just cant ignore when factoring in bodyfat% if a guy has clear separations in his muscles I’m meaning shoulder separation bicep and tricep separation and clear abs you’ll automatically know he’s low bf% possibly 10 or under but the athlete above isn’t fat by any means but he’s 6’1 and 210 pounds that already genetically puts him at a higher bf% because most guys aren’t going to be super lean at that height and over 200 pounds naturally,on top of no abs and and little to no clear separation between the muscles he’s obviously a higher bodyfat% as I said most basketball players range from 12-15%. Most people think Lebron James is under 10% bodyfat and he’s not
Adjust it how? What diet advice are you following where you need an accurate estimation of your bf%?
I’ve seen diets base caloric needs on lean body mass
Which is total mass - fat mass, which is determined from body fat percentage
Yeah I think he was about 94% joking too, but it’s really important to live up to it
That 6% or so might be really important
Still, I think this whole thing is misunderstood. For my “research”, I found this quote on reddit about whey BBers are so low compared to NBA players:
Bodybuilders you see on stage oiled up, flexing and whatever are only at below 5% for a few hours. And they are extremely tired, dehydrated, weak etc.
But… they would have a significantly higher BF% on stage than they will have a few days after. Once they hydrate and restore glycogen, etc… their bodyweight will increase, but their BF% will drop. Therefore, this leads to a reduction in the very characteristics you are attributing to low BF% (separations, abs, striations, etc…) while their BF% drops. Your eye test is not accurate at all.
Just took a picture to show you that bf% might be the wrong thing to pursue
I took it so that you can see my love handle hanging over my boxer. You can see (or believe me) that I have zero leg separation or definition.
Though despite poor lightning you can see some abs definition, even the serratus, which according to bros shows only when very lean. And I’m far from that. No way I’m under 14%. I’m most likely 16. Started a diet this week, but I’m not aiming for a bodyfat. I just know that I won’t go under 180.
Nah. I was 100% joking. ![]()
Let off the hook by a fish head then…tsk
Well, glad to hear you’re ok
I’ve seen these two but I don’t think they’re inherently better/worse than diets that don’t rely on this. If one can reach a level of sustainable weight loss then it doesn’t matter. Sure, if you are way fatter there’s no need to exercise this level of restraint but OP isn’t 30% BF either and if he needs other people’s help to arrive at that ![]()
You got an estimate for me?
Regardless lol the abs the striations the separation is still hand in hand with 10 and under bodyfat % for guys that’s really built up. This dude is built for sure but he’s not 10% and under at 6’1 210 pounds he
No clear separation between the muscles, veins or anything just a well built dude probably as most said around 14%
Looking good still how much are you weighing in this picture by the way?
I’m not trying to lose weight to lean out tho,I want to gain weight while slowly leaning out
Do you have that sentence in your clipboard or do you write it out anew each time?

Since losing fat is way faster and easier than gaining muscle you’ll probably end up lighter anyway even when regaining back your old muscles
I think something like 12% as people have said.
For your other question, 15% is fine to look good and healthy.
Just as an aside, when you have fitness authors and actors and athletes say they are carrying 6-10%, sometimes saying they’re at that all year in some cases, they are full of it.
