What to Do About Calf Soreness?

My calves have been pretty sore lately. Especially after rugby practice they were really killing me. I added more knee ups and jumping exercises in between some exercies in my workouts…and just when they were getting better i just those jumping step up things and bam…they are aching again.

Its more towards the bottom in the soleus, not int he tendon it self. Usually aches as i come up onto my toes…anyways…what do i do? I’ve been rolling them out with a rolling pin and a foam roller. Will my body adjust to this kind of strain? or am i up shit creek. I ask because this is all new to me.

You’ll adapt I get the same same thing except much much worse (like the calves are going to tear) after an especially hard day of sprinting or doing a long distance run.

soft tissue work

Tone back a little on the volume right now while your body adjusts to it. Keep doing the massages. What you can do if you don’t have one of those rollers is use a large wooden spoon and massage your calves. Once you start getting back in shape you can increase the volume. Take it easy until the tenderness goes away. I often found that if I pushed it too hard during these stages I ended up getting shin splints and battling that a lot longer.

I’ve been using my moms marble rolling pin, and the foam roller sometimes. I want to get “the stick” so i can keep it in my bag at practice and between water breaks just roll my calves

This happens all the time in those who start running. Tightness of the calf muscles and maybe some mild compartment syndrome kicking in. It’ll take a few more weeks/month for you to adjust. If the pain gets unbearable reduce the amount of running you are doing, it sucks because right now you will be so eager to get stuck in.

The calf soreness was bad this morning i had practice tonight. So i took some Motrin and it was great during practice…and even after it was good. I deff. tweaked my hip flexor though, but i sprinted ALOT tonigth and really pushed myself. And that’s happened before, it will hurt like hell for days but eventually go away.

The proper treatment for most muscle soreness is soft tissue work and getting bloodflow with nutrients to the muscle.

I am not sure your age, but between 14-15 I was having calf soreness that I attributed to being put in Varsity football as a freshman and getting my butt kicked. The first day of school I remember getting out of bed only to collapse to the floor. My legs couldn’t keep me up. The day before was a grueling practice.

Apparently, I had a major growth spurt that summer and my tendons didn’t stretch enough. The result was they were rubbed and being cut through by the bone. The suck part was I survived spring and summmer practices only to have that doctor send a letter to the high school blacklisting me from sports.

But, that opened the door to martial arts to me

I’ve found ART to be absolutely amazing. Maybe get some of that done while your body adapts? My shin splints were cleared completely in 15 minutes. Not that you have shin splints, but it could develop into it without management

One thing I stopped doing a long time ago was stretching before I ran. I used to stretch and my calves would feel tight, so I figured I needed to stretch more before I ran, so I would and they’d feel even tighter.

So I stopped and just made sure I walked a bit and jogged slowly before i ran and that solved it for me.

funnily enough I have just been watching this. He deals with soft tissue work for calves fairly extensively.
