I’m curious what the differences are as well, besides using more drugs. They certainly knew how to eat and how to train intensely, but there still weren’t really any mass monsters until Haney.
the old school dudes put a massive emphasis on keeping the waist small. Once that line of thinking was abandoned it meant people could push the envelope more in terms of size
What does that mean in terms of training and diet and drugs?

I don’t think GH and insulin were as prominent back then. Perhaps walkway can chime in on this.

well I’m just thinking out loud but I’d guess it means you don’t have to worry so much about things like GH gut so you can go hog wild with that

That’s not really what happened. No one just abandonded a “small waist”. They just applauded more size…and with that much more size the human body is typically not going to maintain a tiny Buchanan wasp waist.

Using more drugs is pretty much all there is to it along with changes in what the bodybuilding ideal is.
In the 60’s, guys having quads as big as they do now would have actually been looked down upon.
To maintain a damn near contest ready 300lbs physique takes not just testosterone but GH, insulin and protein growth factors.
You don’t look like a current Mr. O without the complete combination of genetics that have an affinity greater than most for anabolic drug usage, extreme will power in the gym, extremely strict food intake, and a seriously massive amount of drug usage overall.

yeah that’s what I meant, although I realise I didn’t explain it very well. Your explanation is what I was driving at

Yeah…you can bet if there ever was some guy with a Buchanan waist and Kai Greene proportions…he definitely would win the O…if he didn’t break in half before he got to the stage.

X, or RDS, how do you think Haney or Oliva at their peak would do in Mr. O today?

It sucks that someone without conditon that looks 6 months pregnant can even place and most that are winning still are no where near as conditioned as back in the 70-90s.

I’ll defer to X on this one, not my area of expertise (what is?) at all
It’d be nice to think they’d still be competitive though

swings and roundabouts though eh? Judging is always changing so there might be a shift back towards small waists, better conditioning etc

I really hope so. I hate where it’s taken the sport

pretty much everybody does, but for some reason the bloated guts are still winning shows
I believe that with the possible exception of Ronnie, that Sergio had the greatest natural structure and genetics for the sport. If he had been in his prime in the 90s he’d have been up there wit the top guys.
I really do think Oliva was the most genetically gifted bodybuilder ever. The mass he had in his back and arms while maintaining that tiny waist is absolutely unfathomable.

All before GH an insulin…so imagine that with Ronnie’s genetics.

We never saw the best he could have done.
In terms of small waist and looking more aesthetically pleasing to more people, yes. But he definitely showed us what the best huge mother fucker looks like.
