What is Charles Poliquin Talking About?

When I was in Ohio visiting Dave Tate he said exactly that… when a strength phenom comes his way, instead of trying to force him into his training style to take credit, he simply is there for him to prevent the athlete from screwing himself up.

I say the same thing to my competitive bodybuilders. They are always amazed that I do not give them a super laser-like diet (e.g. eat exactly 245g of bison meat plus 13 almonds…) but rather give them the structure needed for them NOT to screw up. The role of a coach working with elite athletes is to steer them in the right direction and make sure that they stay on path.

On Poliquin and training athletes- I am always suspicious of people who trot out a famous athlete and say “Look what I did!”. A good friend and lifting partner has worked with a great number of pro athletes and he never does this.

And “Sometimes it’s best to just let them do what they do. The last thing you want to do as a trainer is fuck up a world class athlete. It requires some humility to acknowledge that what they have accomplished has nothing to do with you.”

It seems that the mistake that the Poliquins and Cheks of the world have made is to believe that they are somehow responsible for the accomplishment of an athlete.

Someone needs to reintroduce them to the cart/horse relationship, and hope that they get it right at some point.

That right there is why I respect CT.[/quote]

Right back at you big boy

The point would be national, not racial.

Some of Poliquin’s advice has really helped me… He recommended a certain type of magnesium to help improve sleep, and it’s worked great for me. I can’t live without the stuff now. I also liked his articles in the Ironman mags.

He’s had a big influence in my training and nutrition… Did his “Winning the Arms Race” book and had good results. Most of it is advice I read from other people too. I figure if a few different experts are saying, for example, grass feed beef is better than grain feed. Then its worth checking out. When you’ve been training for a while and your in a rut, I’m open to almost anything that sounds like I could get better results…

Take what you like from it and leave the rest…
