I agree that his shoulders aren’t his best asset for sure, and I don’t know his arm size, but if getting to his level of ‘sloppy’ is what it takes for him to get to this level of jacked, then it’s working for him (IMO).

This is the next frame after ‘sloppy’. Of course, we don’t know how long after this is, or whether it’s even in the same timeframe of training. I suspect it probably is, so what is this, 8 weeks of hardcore diet? 10-12 weeks? 16 weeks?
I would take a year or 3 of sloppy to be able to diet down to this (at least at this point in my lifting career), especially given the age.

Damn, I wonder what the time frame is in the first video of him between looking sloppy as hell and then massive/lean.
Don’t know what the time frame is, but I don’t think it’s fair to say “sloppy as hell”. Just checked his stats-- He competed 5’8", 198 and he’s now over 40 years old (a few years older than myself). Don’t know his current weight.
Seeing this picture of him just inspired the shit outta me, especially given his age.
I’m about the same height and my last progress pic isn’t too far removed from this* — NO, I’m not saying I’m holding as much muscle as Dave in this pic, just saying that given his frame and size I can see the direction is on track and that looking a bit smooth (non-competition obviously) isn’t the SIN many people around here make it out to be.
This video just justified to me that I’m on the right track for my size/strength goals. Might not work for anyone else, but it sure as shit is working for me.
PX: I don’t know if I’m quite training at his level, but I’m sure as Hell trying. I ended this year on 5 highs for me: Heaviest bench, Heaviest squat, heaviest rows, biggest arm, heaviest weight of my entire life. I could not have achieved that on much less food than I’m consuming now (IMO). The progress curve is not leveling off, and barring injury, I don’t see it happening.
- edit: to be clear, I’m carrying more fat than in this picture of Dave for sure.
There really is a problem with perception when this condition is considered fat and sloppy. His abs are visible. He just isn’t ripped. Most people sure as hell won’t gain much muscle while maintaining a body fat percentage even leaner than that. He is in great shape for an off season to say the least. I am surprised he competed as a super heavy because he doesn’t seem to be carrying that much muscle…especially in his shoulders.
I consider that sloppy as hell because he his arms are just straight lines. There is no capping of the delt, no noticeable triceps or brachialis development to give the arm a 3D look from the front and he doesn’t even appear to have traps. He just doesn’t look muscular at all in that pic. It’s just a huge difference from the ones shown later in the video, that is definitely not just an “off season” pic.
Dude, he doesn’t have very big arms or big shoulders even in contest shape. He just doesn’t have the genetics for it. His arms look impressive because of the level of leanness and his genetic gift for vascularity, not because they are as big as Coleman’s or even Phil Heath.
I understand what you are trying to say, but one reason his abdomen is so prominent is because he isn’t exactly a Markus Rhul type of mass monster with a chest 10 inches deep to his sternum. His shoulders just aren’t impressive.
He is one of those guys who can win primarily because of conditioning.
He’s been to the nationals a bunch of times, but he still hasn’t turned pro (his goal). I believe his delts and triceps are part of the reason–he’s definitely way above average, but can’t beat the very top guys because of his genetic limitations.
When he keeps them contracted, his abs look incredible. They have a unique look to them that in many ways makes up for other deficiencies in his build. Of course, he, like many other top-level competitors, looks awful when he relaxes his gut. I have never cared about that myself, since it can be controlled during posing, and for me it is all about what the poses look like.
$20 says if you guys had no idea who that guy was and that was the only picture you saw, you would be calling that sloppy as hell too.
I dunno Way. Not lean by any stretch of the word, but still some ab definition (fucker), good amount of size visible, and doesn’t have that “sloppy fat” look, IMHO.
I would never have expected him to diet down to what he looks like lean, but still.

It probably wouldn’t look as bad if he didn’t have the most distended gut I’ve ever seen.

Not “sloppy as hell”, that’s for sure. But kinda unimpressive considering his in-condition shots.
Well, bodybuilding is all about presentation and that “sloppy” before photo has been taken in as sloppy a pose as possible without making the bullshitting too obvious.
Here’s FattyFat’s patented way for almost instantaneous sloppificattion: gain some fat, put yourself into a temporary puffy state (lots of dairy, sleep deprivation, hard training) and de-carb. Don’t forget disadvantageous lighting.
Btw, way: I could get myself about 3.4 lbs worth of quark protein for 20 bucks.

For the record, many of these guys would look less impressive if you caught them truly relaxing their gut and standing without flexing. This guy’s weaknesses are apparent even when dieted down. They are just more visible when fatter and not flexing. He has little shoulders and arms that don’t match his torso. That before pic does not surprise me at all.
As for bad before pics, don’t forget the salt water and to eat about 3lbs of food right before you take the picture. A facial expression like you just escaped WWII war torn Germany doesn’t hurt either. Hell, if you can manage for one single tear to fall right when the shutter flashes you will have “before pic gold”!
FF, Equis, Way, and a handful of randoms = good fight. I’m partial to what X is saying but sorta agree with Waylanderxx. He’s not very pretty but the fucker can get in condition ala Jumbo Palumbo

Could you find a picture of yourself making a worthwhile post?

You’re right - I arrived at the same conclusion. The overuse of “brah” and “u mad?” was the clincher. Actually, the fact that he name dropped a dead guy (Bruce Lee) was the clincher.
I couldn’t trace his avatar pic: my usual technique didn’t work ![]()

It matters not if I think you’re a loser; it matters when you consider yourself to be a loser. Then the accounts open themselves. I just point them out, Grasshopper.
