What I Think of 20 Rep Squats

Thank God this was bumped. Apparently I’m going to start incorporating these early into my leg days (actually, Widowmakers was the term used) and I’m getting pretty amped up about them.

Haven’t done them yet, but I’m sure they’ll kick my mental and physical ass all over the place. I’m psyched!

EDIT: I know these Widowmakers won’t necessarily be in true 20-rep squat fashion, but I’m NOT going to coast through them, for whatever it’s worth.

As in DC Widowmakers? I’ve done them for leg press and hack squat and they’re pretty fucking brutal. I was too much of a pussy to do them consistently for back squats.

They are brutal, but you feel like a million bucks when you polish off a set.

If you want motivation for a perfect (beltless) 20 rep squat, check out the late, great Jessie Marunde. Total work ethic!

Thats the way I’ve been doing em after I got that scare with my back. 315 for 10 is a breeze compared to 5x20 with 135 any day of the week.

Not saying this to be in poor taste or comical, but aren’t 20-rep (or Widowmaker) squats the reason he died?

I’m not sure. I heard it was tire flips in the intense summer heat. But I could be wrong.

Found this for another website:

Friends, we suffered a great loss in the strongman community last evening. The Sequim Crew was doing what they do. Training hard and particularly training Jesse for the WSM contest in Anaheim. He died quickly and painlessly.

The squat set was as follows:
230kg x 8
190kg x 8
150kg x 8
110kg x 8
70kg x 8
Followed immediately by:
600# tire flip
265# stone load
All of this was done with no rest between sets. Rack, pull, go
At the completion of these sets Jesse laid on his back, on the cold floor like normal. Breck and Sarge noticed that his breathing was laborious. Jesse became incoherent and stopped breathing. We administered cpr, called 911 and continued to resusitate until paramedics arrived. They set up the defibrillator, epinephrin, to no avail. He was worked on for over an hour between Breck, Sarge and the paramedics.

These are the facts as it happened. We are deeply saddened by this tragic loss. We appreciate your support and prayers.

The Sequim Crew

Sounds like a combination of everything. Again, I don’t want this to be construed the wrong way, but after reading about what he did makes me feel tons better about the squats.

20 rep squats are great!

Squats are the massive builders of warriors!

20 rep squats are mentally draining as well. Most people just don’t have the mind set to dig that much deeper in their reserves to complete the 20 reps. Infact, most people will do 20 rep squats once and never go back to them again.

I started with 135 ATG 20 reps squats but got stuck recently at 240 ATG. I am doing a velocity lite diet and lost 17lbs so far. Maybe I should do the 20 reps after the diet is over? Sometimes I think it is just a mental thing - because I KNOW I lost some weight, I make myself believe that I can not do as much.

my twenty rep program goes like this

20 rep squats
Weighted 45 hypers 1x20-25
Military press 1-2x10
Incline DB press 1-2x10
DB “kroc” Rows 1x20-25
Barbell curls 1-2x10
Reverse flyes 2x15
Face pulls 2x15

thats it. repeat every 2-3 days depending on how you feel. for the 1 or 2 set exerecises: day 1 do 1 set, day 2 do 2 sets, day 3 add weight and do one set, day 4 do two sets of previous weight, etc. etc. until you plateau then find another program. it works for me.

Really? i find i cant do anything cept calve raises after squats

I do them and there fucking miserable but the pump is rad.

Brought a couple Of Dardens books back in 1989.

I keep coming back to that kind of training.

Always got great results for a few months outta them.

Out of curiosity, how long does it take you guys to do your 20 rep squat set?

My best was 405lb for 20. But that wasn’t my 10 rep max, still fuckin brutal however.

Maybe you should change your name then? Haha…

This is very true. I suppose I am one of those people but the difference is I did them many times…but in the distant past (over five years ago).

They are more than just mentally draining. They are mentally crushing - IF you really challenge yourself and push yourself to the limit with the poundage and the pause between reps and full squat depth.

In fact they are mentally crushing enough that I don’t do them anymore as they are demotivating TO ME. They would keep me out of the gym, not in it where I belong. FWIW, I train completely alone 99% of the time in my home gym.

I honestly think I slay the iron dragon by gradually wearing him down not by a quick triumphant kill…if you get my drift.[/quote]
