What I Think of 20 Rep Squats

Fucking disgusting. Sickening. The sheer thought of doing something like that to myself often makes me question my fucking sanity!

But hey, it works. Feel my pain, guys. Share your thoughts.

Can’t wait to do them. I won’t even bother putting myself through them while dieting, but when it’s time to bulk it may be the first program I use.

So who all actually gets sick after doing them?

They are crazy. It’ll make you see stars, make you wanna barf, and make you want to find excuses to not work out that day.

But in the end, few things make you feel more accomplished than them.

The first routine I did (besides the good ol’ curls and bench that everyone loves so much) was a 20-rep “squats and milk” routine.

The squats, I think, made me a man and added mass.

The milk gave me the runs.

I haven’t actually gotten ‘sick’ per se but right now I feel like I was in a train wreck… Whatever that means.

I got sick. By the time 10 reps come around, your body is screaming. The sickness doesn’t come until you’ve racked the bar and you’re asking yourself “what the hell did I just go through…”

I find the last 5 to be just hell. My arms and wrists go dead from holding the bar so long, I shake, I get severely out of breath, and when the bar finally gets racked i could just drop right there underneath it. It’s really something…

How many reps do you guys normally do squats for?

I do 4 sets of 14 for them usually. Then the same for leg press and lying leg curls.

I’m in football at the moment, but as soon as it’s over i plan to start a 20 rep squat workout. It’s 2x a week and try to add 5lbs a week or a session?

Gonna be a while before I put myself through that kind of pain again,

The 20 rep squat program is 1 working set of 20 reps. It is usually done with your 10 rep max. You can take a break (stop between reps and take a breath or 2), but cannot set the bar down until the set is complete.

This is MUCH different than 4 sets of 14. It is a complete physical and mental ass beating.

Never tried it, but most likely will soon. How long typically does a set take? I guess it’d depend on each person, but if you picked your true 10 rep max, how long might it take?

Love em’ they were a big part of my early mass gains! I agree with Ian King’s description for the best way to perform them:

*Breathing squat technique: There are a few ways to do this, but here’s a basic description. Choose a weight you normally use for a ten rep set of squats. You’ll now use that weight to get twenty reps with appropriate breathing during each rep:

Reps 1-10: One breath each rep

Reps 11-15: Two breaths each rep, second one taken during pause at top of rep

Reps 16-20 : Three breaths per rep, second and third one taken during pause at top of rep

When I did 300x20 I think it took me 4 minutes or so, maybe a bit longer. Don’t feel like doing that again any time soon.

I have a love/hate relationship with 20 rep squats. I’ve done them on and off my lifting career and can attribute significant mass gains because of them.

I’ve been doing these over the last 4 to 5 weeks. It typically takes me about 2 minutes to complete a 20 rep set. I usually will follow up with the same weight for 2 more sets with whatever I can get. Typically 14 to 16 reps the next set and 12 after that. Yes, I know; that can be seen as overtraining.

Then I will go rep out on the leg press for 2 minutes straight and see how many reps I can get during that time period. Then I’ll do the same thing on the leg extension for another 2 minutes of sheer hell (One of the bodyparts I’m focusing on growing right now is quads).

Afte that it’s natural GHRs for three sets of 6 to 8 and then I’m done. So far my strength and size have been shooting through the roof.

Two weeks ago I did 20 rep squats with 315 (new PR for me). The last two weeks I’ve been working with 375 and trying to get up to 20 reps. 3 sets of ten reps last week. 3 sets of 11 reps today.

Good fun. Everyone should do them at least once.

They sure puff you out too. And they make you fucking hungry for the rest of the day.

I don’t like the Super Squats program, it just looks too simple to me, could cause imbalances imo. But I would think adding in a 20 rep squat set in a regular hypertrophy program on a leg day, would do quite well

Not to sound ignorant, but do those extra 6 reps really make all the difference?

You’re not reading. These are not normal sets. You’re not putting your 25 rep max on the bar and doing sets of 20 reps (similar to what you’re doing with your 4x14).

You take your 10 rep max and do 20 reps with it. You keep the bar on your back until it’s done. How does that not sound brutal to you? Try it sometime (but don’t puss out…you have to actually use your 10 rep max in order to do it correctly).

4 sets of 14 is absolutely nothing like 20 rep squats. You will have to load a bar with THE MAX AMOUNT YOU CAN DO FOR 10 REPS and then do it for 20 to understand the difference.

The idea behind 20 rep squats is digging deep and pushing harder than you’ve pushed in a while (if ever).
