What Happened to the Social Aspect of Going to the Gym?

now nobody talks at all. everyone trying so hard to be detached etc…its ridiculous as hell. Used to make gym friends back in tghe day. Millenials killed this too…

Speaking for myself, when I go to the gym, I’m in beastmode. I do not like distractions. I want results. It’s my time to not “multitask” but focus on results.

Good Sir I will have you know that I practice detached anti-social behavior in all avenues of life: not just the gym.

I’m not going to strike up conversations with random people just for small talk unless I’m approached first. I’m aware that people have time constraints and are generally going to the gym to workout first. That being said, if someone strikes up a conversation with me I’m more than happy to reciprocate.

I just signed back up to a locally-run gym after two years of not lifting there. It is plenty social if you want a little chit-chat in between sets. In fact, the same guy who sparked up a conversation telling me what I did wrong leading up to my first 600 deadlift was still there, still struggling with pulling 3 plates, still ready to impart all of his wisdom to me.

After getting caught up with the guy in the hot tub, not only is he an expert on lifting twice what he’s able to do, he also holds several black belts in different martial arts. Apparently I’ve wasted my time studying Brazilian Jiu Jitsu for the last year. Aikido is the real stuff.

So you see, there are many opportunities to be social in a gym setting. If you’re ever in doubt about how to break the ice, just offer someone unsolicited advice!

Depends on the gym.

2 local gyms to me are worlds apart, the first nobody talks, everyone acts hard and tries to intimidated. The second is very friendly and there is good banter, just a really great atmosphere, every one is happy to share equipment and work around each other the best they can.

So I think it depends on the culture within the gym.

We don’t have the time. Dedicated gym goers are usually very busy outside the gym with either work, family, etc.
In order to be consistent I pack a lot into everyday. Even on my off days from work I’m busy.

Doesn’t matter to me one way or the other. I hate training.

Oh please… one day when we’re on a cruise ship and terrorists take everyone hostage, I’m going to laugh at you when you struggle on the floor with one of them while I take out 20 at the same time just by using their own force against them.

Hmmmm…if you weren’t allowed to for a few years, I bet you’d love it.

I really don’t want people to talk to me in the gym.

I’m a friendly guy everywhere else, but when I’m in the gym I’ve got shit to do and I’d rather be left alone.

As a slight aside: in the gym yesterday was a guy with a swastika tattoo on his leg and a t-shirt that said “European Blood: Keep it White.”

I’d never seen that before in a gym.

Some people are so blinded by ignorance. Makes you wonder if we really are progressing as humanity. After all can’t people realize we are all made of the same elements that even beautiful stars are made of. Edit I believe this applies to people of all beliefs in some way.

Ok…great

I took a 9 year break. Didn’t really help much lol.

Hmmmm…my husband has no motivation either plays and that’s it. I’m a competitive type person…I’m sure I’m being neurotyped, but I like to set goals and beat them. I do not settle and am always wanting to improve myself in different things. I am working on observing people in my life now and what role they play along with self reflection. Do you have anything that could motivate you?

Building my body, i.e, the results are what motivate me. Training is the means to an end.

Well at least you do have motivation but try looking at the positives instead of a “finality” word like hate. It’s like a woman being pregnant. You hate all the shit until the end, there’s a miracle. Yet, after that, they want to lose weight, get surgery etc instead of looking at the miracle that came out of it. Be thankful you are able to do what you do and don’t forget to appreciate the hard work and prs. Because that’s an accomplishment you did and nobody can take that away from you. You’ve chosen a path don’t get side tracked would you put a kid up for adoption :hugs:

Do you have a lifting partner? Tonight I’m dragging a friend of mine with me because he’s depressed about his breakup with his gf. I’m so motivated cuz He’s a “manly man” I’m gonna try lifting with my pink chuck Taylor’s to experiment with them,my pink lifting gloves, a pink cami and a pink ribbon in my hair. He can’t back out cuz I picked out his mom’s mother’s day present and can hold it hostage.

Depends on the gym…

If I’m training at work, I usually get the oldies and colleagues rocking up expecting a full blown chinwag, which is annoying as fuck. Purely because the chat is banal which doesn’t help as my workouts are quite painful right now.

At my other gym, the clientele are a bit more ‘switched on’ regarding training chat and more entertaining, along with the fact that they know when to shut the fuck up.

In saying that I’ve made quite a few friends from all walks of life, thanks to training.

Yeah I have a couple of them on different days. I’m not anti-social lol.

LMAO
