Depends on what you are looking for. Are you a begginer or new to westside? If I were you I would call Dave or Jim at Elite Fitness and tell them what you are looking for and they will tell you what you need.
The seminar package is good and goes in depth about the training method. Tate gives the why behind the training and includes gym footage on how to execute the movements. I have not seen all of the others with the exception of the bench press workout. The bench press workout is a lot more training footage. The seminar tapes, IMHO, are really good for someone who is relatively new to westside methods.
I have the seminar package and will probably put it on Ebay next week.
Well, I have been training for years but my strength training was geared toward hockey (no you haven’t heard of me, I wasn’t that good). But I do consider myself a beginner when it comes to powerlifting. I have read just about every Westside article on T-mag, Westside-barbell.com and the Elite Fitness site but as I was reading one of the many articles it was pointed out that you actually need to see the how the exercises are performed and not just read about them.
Yeah, If you are new, definitely go with the seminar package. It is a few years old now, but it still has all the basic stuff you need if you are new to the Westside style of training. The other videos go a little more in depth on some things but sometimes I can see where they would just confuse a beginner and make them get ahead of themselves.
In my opinion you should read the Eight Keys articles and the periodization articles by Dave Tate on this site first. Then buy the videos that show exercise execution, not the seminar, if you’re short on cash. Otherwise buy 'em all.
I have the westside seminar tapes. They are good and go over the method. There won’t be much new information on them if you have read all of Tate’s articles here and on EFS. I saw the seminar part once but viewed the training part quite a few times. The best part of the tapes is when Tate goes over the exercises and corrects bad form. Good if you are new to the Westside method.
If I were you I would go with the Louie tapes. They go over more of the exercises you will see in the seminar tapes. I have the squat workout tapes and it shows you how squat workouts are supposed to be, except those dudes use a shitload of weight! Very motivating. I would imagine the other tapes are similar and would cover much more exercises. If the exercises is are what you want, thats what you get with the Louie tapes.
I have all the tapes. The seminar videos show both the exercises AND do a lot of describing WHY. Louie’s package has a TON of workouts and a ton of exercises with a little explaination. Either of them will work for you. Keep in mind the seminars give you a Louie interview on one tape and an outline with a lot of good articles and material in it for reference. Can’t go wrong either way.
I have all the Westside videos- very informative. You may find that you have to rewind a lot as Louie speaks unscripted sometimes (digresses and then returns to subject) and talks quickly. You’ll need to do this when he is explaining. Interesting to see the workouts, helps technique and refine the movement. I think they are well worth the investment if you are interested in this style of training.
Thanks for all the input. I’ve read the Eight Keys articles and understand the basic template, now I’d like to see how some of the exercises are performed. It sounds like I should get the seminar tapes first. Brian, I’ll be looking for them on EBay.
