cool dude…where do you wrestle at if you dont mind sharing? Im a d1 strength coach

i wrestle d3 in PA. Ursinus College.

Do you guys as a team train like this in the off season or is this just your deal that you do on your own? I have known quite a few wrestlers who train using conjugate periodization (with some tweaks) with great success. Thats cool though, those are pretty good numbers for a 57[/quote]

thanks. to be honest, we’re given a few different methods that we could use. however, not many of us follow them in the offseason. uw-lacrosse uses a cardio-strength workout that we do during the season that we call the bear. 6 sets of 6 reps. power clean, fron squat, push press, back squat, push press, and repeat. we do that and the tabata method with front squats during the season.

during the off-season our main goal is gain as much strength as possile while staying within 10-15 pounds of our wrestling weight. I was actually a small 157 this year but my bodyfat wouldnt allow me to drop to 149. so, i hope to keep improving those numbers so my strength level matches my technique lol. what sports do you coach?

Right now i assist with football, and am in charge of baseball, softball, and soccer. At my previous job I worked with wrestling. That sounds like a decent in seson program, especially the tabata method! How often do you guys do that? Weekly?

I wear a metal pro thats way to big with wore out inzer briefs. I have a single ply rage x shirt and a metal DL suit.

What size school do you work at? I have a good friend that is a coach at vandi curt turner, he says it is a good job but extremely busy, sounds like you are in the same boat about being busy.

I am a teacher and assistant in the weight room and head middle school coach I dont have any time I cant imagine working in college.

Whens your meet? Mine is this saturday have to just see how it goes.

thanks

John

We do it twice a week depending on our workload and when we need to make weight. we generally do it right after practice.

John,

I work at kent State University, we are Div 1A, so about 24,000 students I think. Busy to say the least...

What kind of metal dl suit? I am thinking of trying out conventional again after this meet because my good morning strength has gone up so much. I have a really really crappy titan conventional deadlift suit that is probably the biggest waste of 50 dollars. I have been curious about how the metal suit works. My meet is next sunday the 2oth in Columbus. I feel great (knock on wood) so I will just get a few gpp sessions in between now and then. Where are you competing at?

I have an old metal dl suit. I think it would be called a pro however when I bought it it was just called metal, all my shit is worn out and to damn big, I am going to do a raw meet next.

I competed today in athens, APC, squat sucked it up, 600, went 501.5 on the bench which was a 50lb PR for a meet, pulled 573 easy, should have tried 525 and 600. I will post some pictures tom. All in all it was a really good day, squat was just reall off, I expected bench and dead lift to be as well however they were really on.

I have to be honest think I got a little scared on the squat, Pat Hall was in my weight class, He opened at 825? ON THE WAY DOWN HIS KNEE GAVE WAY HE FELL AND THE WEIGHT LANDED ON HIM IT LOOKED LIKE HE BROKE BOTH HIS LEGS. PLEASE KEEP HIM IN YOUR PRAYERS.

After Pat’s accident I got pretty sick to my stomich it was terrible.

Wow thats nuts, I hope he recovers. I had a similar incident happen to me on bench at junior nationals last yer. I was in the hole for my third attempt and had just barely missed 600 on my second so I was feeling ready to come back and get it…

welll the guy who was on the platform lost control in his shirt and somehow broke his radius in his forearm. It was a complete mind f**k for me and the guy on deck because of what we saw and we had to wait almost 45 minutes until we could go. With all that said, it is still one of the safest sports (i am knocking on wood as I type this).

Hey John my grandma could have pulled 573!

Ha ha

Rob

I ordered and read the Beginner Training Manual and the Training Template Manual .

first question…

is using safety-pins in a rack “close enough” to using boards ?

or…

is there a way to use boards when lifting with no partner ?

You can use a band to hold the board steady like this.

http://asp.elitefts.com/qa/default.asp?qid=13315&tid=102

thanks Joe…thats pretty slick .

second question…

do most users of the Westside methods stay on it year around ?

or do some flip to other programs / periodization templates ?

You can also just wear two shirts like a wife beater and a shirt over. Slide the board between the two shits. It holds well and you don’t have to worry about all the band shit.
If you don’t mind slivers that you may get, you don’t even need to worry about wearing an under shirt.

This is the first real heavy work out since the meet. I did a couple of light work outs last week, took saturday off. I felt like hell seems like meets just beet my ass all my joints hurt like hell.

first night of Westside tonight…DE Bench .

3 day/week , beginner template . only change was replacing 4-bd press with rack-lockouts…gotta make boards yet .

1 hour and 15 minutes , including warm-ups . sound about right ? seemed kinda quick …

my BEST ME squat day ever yesterday.
didnt use bands yesterday warmed up at 225. worked up to 315. hit that for 6 twice off a box 2 inches below parallel. then jumped up to 365, hit that for 3. then two sets of doubles at 385. They went up really easily too. It was a great feeling. Finished it up with some speed sets of deadlifts and then an ab circuit. one of my best lifting days of my life.

The westside template is a form periodization…conjugate periodization to be exact…so yes most people do it year round.
