Thanks buddy, thats how I do front squats, Its how I used to do back squats but I do them PL style, I figure do front squats for the quads and wide stance box squats for the backside.
I didn’t know I went that low, I highly recommend video taping your lifts.
Once I get my core up to snuff so I don’t tilt forward so much I think my front squat will continue to climb. I know my quads are strong enough.
I lowered my deadlift max for the percentage calculations by 5%. I got through all of the deadlift sets without breaking from 3 minute intervals. My delicate hands seemed to appreciate the slight reduction in intensity. The bench press sets went well, but I was definitely a bit fatigued by the end of the dumbbell bench press sets. I’m going to bump up all of my maxes by 5lbs for the start of Sheiko #30 next week.

Kalle, do you find it tough to get a big breath on the front squats? I know that when I get over 250 or so, I feel like the weight prevents me for getting a big belly full of air. It’s ok on a single, but seems to be a limiting factor on sets of 4-6 reps.

To some extent yeah but not really. I am also used to breathing with that damn 12" Log crushing my chest so maybe a bar doesn’t seem like much compared to that?
A)DE 12" Box Squat
Bar x some

185 x 2

B)DE Dead

C)Box Jumps (single-leg jumps are done on each side)
2 leg to 20.5" x 5
1 leg to 20.5" x 3
2 leg to 30.5" x 3
1 leg to 30.5" x 1 1 leg to 34.5" x 1 PR + a whopping 1/2 inch!
2 leg to 40.5" x 1
2 leg to 44.5" x 1
2 leg to 50.5" x MISS, MISS
2 leg to 50" x 1 (tie PR)
NOTES: I had to cut this one short as I needed to drive my dad to an appointment about an hour north of where we live. I wanted to do some paused GMs, some single-leg squats and some abs, but I was pretty happy with what I did. DLing felt consistent and fast. I was going to do weighted box jumps with our new x-vest but I didn’t want to mess around with loading it up when I was so short on time.
My dad was diagnosed with liver cancer two weeks ago, so we’ve been meeting with various specialists to determine what kind of treatment they can do for him to extend his life without compromising the quality of it. So far, the doctors have seemed optimistic, as his health is decent for a 70 year-old man. I lost my mother pretty suddenly to a pulmonary embolism a little over two years ago, and she was only 58, so I took the news of my dad’s diagnosis pretty hard at first. I still feel like such a fucking kid sometimes, and it’s hard for me to imagine life without my parents and only a handful of extended family I know. I feel like my mom could have used someone with her to help her make decisions about her health care, so I’m going with my dad to every little appointment he has. He’s taking the news well and just living one day at a time, so I’m trying to do the same. Who knows, he could still be here a couple years from now, to see me married, maybe with a son or daughter, and hopefully totaling something a little closer to 2000 than 1000…

Good point. I also use a BB arm position rather than Oly, and I wonder if that has something to do with it. Maybe I just try sucking it up, I hear that helps with these kind of problems. lol.

I find to use a BB position to get it in the “crook” of my shoulder it puts the bar a lot closer to my throat which might be your case. In the OLy style there is a little bit of space between the bar and my throat.
A. Push Press

C2. Chin-Up

I’m glad that I made some progress in today’s session. It’s been a while that I’ve set a max PR. I’ll take this one even though this is my second week doing “push presses”.
On my last set, I was trying to get a 5-rep PR, but ended up clocking self good on the chin on the way up (see Squat Rack Curl thread). It pretty much ended my attempt for a 5-rep PR.
The rest of the session was kinda blah as I was pretty worn out from the push presses, but at least I got stuff done. Supersetting pull-ups and chin-ups is a killer! After going to failure on the pull-ups, I’d eek out a rep or two more of chin-ups. Talk about some really tired lats and biceps!
Bent over rows don’t work well with me… Plus grip kept slipping
Super Set
Axle curls
40x8
60x8
70x8
Rear Delt Raise
15x15
25x8
25x8
Real happy with my Log Overhead, I stopped the DB OH press as my shoulder have been bothering me a bit. No More bent over rows for me I don’t think they help me much at all, sticking to 1 arm db rows…

Great PR Kalle. You’re moving that log pretty good!
Are you going to Phill’s competition early next year? Got anything specific you’re training for? You’ve been progressing nicely and hovering not that much over 200. It seems like you’d be ready for a competition anytime (assuming the bicep holds up).

Mountainman, I had a few questions for you about the foam box squatting.
How long have you been using this?
Are you using the same one the Louie sells on his site?
How do you think this will help you?
How often do you plan to use it?

Thanks buddy, the bicep fells great. I am doing Phill’s comp in February to bad it has a axle press and not a log press! There isn’t many comps around this time of the year as nationals is this weekend But I’d expect 3-6 comps in California so I should be busy. I heard chances are there will be a comp in SD this summer. Which if there is I will most likely do.
I need to work on farmers walks and stones. Stones becuase I haven’t done them near enough and farmers walk becuase well they don’t agree with my short stubby legs and small hands.
I do not have the foam pad that LS sells. I want one just want to make sure I like them before spending 70 bucks. I am using two fitness mats folded in half on top of the box, I believe it is about 5 inches thick?
I do not know if it will help or if it is just a gimmic. Several people have posted that they have injured their back doing these squats. I am not sure if they are benifitial or not yet. I just started using them in my training
I am planning on using them on dynamic squat day for a few weeks I will keep you updated.
Tonights workout was ok damn elbow is killin me.
RE upper
dynamic warm up
v grip pull downs 3 sets
inverted lat bar 3 sets
dumbell clings 2 sets

Definitely keep in in the loop on your schedule, especially if you’re coming down here to SD. Hopefully I can bring my son and we’ll cheer you on together.

Don’t you just hate it when Real Life™ gets in the way?
Those kinds of things happen, and it’s discouraging at times because you feel like you’re taking two steps forward and one step back. But, persistence is the name of this iron game that we’re in. Keep at it and come back strong, stronger than you ever were before!

AD, my advice to you is to not try and break any records your first day back. I might consider going for a 3 RM or even trying a new exercise. This way you can minimize your discouragement. The worst thing that you can do is fuck up your ME days, by missing a bunch of lifts that you attempted only to sooth your ego.

Sure…just like how you did when I had the fire/flu a few weeks ago, no?
I’m just getting back to my pre-flu weight. I weighed 177.0 last night, a pound lighter than my pre-flu weight, but at least getting back closer.
I’m gonna have to skip my gym session today because I’ve got a teacher-parent conference, it’s part of that Real Life™ thing. Maybe I’ll do some pulling tomorrow if I can sneak in a session between all the kids’ activities during the weekend.
