ME squat
decided to go in today and do some squats without the briefs.
squat
0x10
135x6
225x4
315x3
405x2
495x1
585x3- i wrapped lightly on these. they felt good but the briefs have been giving me some out of the hole. it’s time for some low box squats!!

zerchers squats-now… i’ve never done these. i set up so i’m ATG. i’ve seen videos of guys doing them with the hips high so they look like a bastardized good morning. my conclusion on the zercher… they are very uncomfortable + they make me feel weak = my new favorite movement!!

0x6
135x6
225x4
315x4
405x2- my lower back was toast after these so what else but do some good morning squats.

good morning squats
225x10- that was it… my lower back was done

calves for Phill and Abs (also for Phill :))

Farmers walk

130lbs 80ft turn at 40ft
180lbs 80ft turn at 40ft
180lbs 80ft turn at 40ft
180lbs 80ft DROPPED doing the turn

I hate farmers walk… I SUCK at them, the turn was a killer and my upper back is pretty tight, strained it on the turn on the 2nd run. foot speed was good, I tried grabbing in the middle of the bar instead of towards the end, I felt a lot better doing this.

Had more control of the weight for sure. my turn SUUUUUUUCKS! but I think this is the most weight I have successfully made a turn with so I should be happy. Even if it was deadly slow and very hard.

Thought about doing some keg carrys but my upper back wasn’t felling it.
Good work bro and man do I hear you on the turns. I need work as well whats helped was working them with Light runs with lots of turns. Go fast but learn to control the turn in the end your better off and save time and energy slowing down and making a solid turn. Then on other sets or other days GO dog ass heavy

Keep pluggin along, steps. a few month ago Id have never thought id be nailing 300 lb farmers but got them for a solid run now just have to work them to where I can make 1 turn LOL

Hey, I met an old lady today at the Dump who, and this is a direct quote from my old geaser boss, “has 2 plastic hips and one boobie”.

Anyway, she handled her 20gal bags of garbage real smooth dispite the rain and cold. Something to look into. The plastic hip. Not the single boobie.

Meet Report

First State Power Frenzy

New Castle, DE

Reported to the meet location this morning and expected to be around 230ish, but to my surprise I weighed 223.5. I thought the scale was off, but the meet director said it was super accurate because he had an official 100Kg brick from the US Dept of Agriculture that registers a weight of 220.56 lbs. I took everything off except for my underwear and it registered 222.5; walked around and took a couple of leaks and managed to squeak in at exactly 220.5. Ran to McDonald’s and had breakfast right afterward to add back a couple of pounds, but mainly 'cause I was hungry.

On to the meet. There were not a lot of full power meet lifters, so they jammed all of us into one flight (about 15 people, I think). The warm-up room was a bit of a cluster-fuck. It was nice that they had a monolift to use, but there was no room to put on your equipment and people were running into each other. Scott Yard from EFS was there, which was kind of cool, helping his buddy Aaron Utermahlen (also a huge guy). Anyway, managed to get the warm-ups in just in time and the last w/u felt like an empty bar.

Attempts
1st 505 Good (Absolutely killed it, I’m in the meet)
2nd 555 Good (Also Smoked it, 10# PR)
3rd 600 No good :frowning: - bar rolled a little in the hole, caused me to lose arch; once that happened didn’t have a prayer. The weight did feel light on my shoulders and if not for the bar slippage, I’m confident that I would have nailed it.

They split up the bench flights with the bench only people going solo and the full power folk in another, so we got a much-needed break, since the squat rotation was so tight. Nothing out of the ordinary with the warm-ups, so fast forward to the actual lifting.

Attempts
1st 385 Good (Could have done it in my sleep, still in it)
2nd 415 Good (Killed it, 10# PR)
3rd 450 No good - Went for a big PR here and I almost got it. When I took the hand-off, the weight felt like 225. I brought it down to my chest and waited for the press signal. The weight flew up and then about 3-4 inches from lockout the bar drifted back toward the rack and I lost it. Spotters were great and grabbed it. Damn it, so close!!!

Deadlift flight was huge, all full power and push/pull people put together, but thankfully warm-ups went much smoother this time.

Attempts
1st 475 Good (Like a warm-up)
2nd 500 Good (Also easy)
3rd 550 No good - Bear with me on this one. I know I made a big jump between 2 and 3, but my handler saw how easy 500 went up and he figured at least 50 more was possible. I thought about playing it safe and going for 530, which would’ve been a 5# PR, but figured I have more meets to participate in down the line. The bar flew off the floor, but my hips got a little high and ~2 inches before lockout I hit a wall. I could have held the bar there all day - it wasn’t going to budge. I’ll post a picture that my wife took to show where I missed. When I saw it I was pissed even more.

Total: 1470 lbs. @ 220.5 BW; First place in weight class…out of 1 lifter. I figure the technical stuff cost me 85 lbs, and on a good day I definitely would have reached 1600 for a total. There were 4 or 5 lifters in the 242s, so that class was a lot more competitive. Overall, I had a great time, saw some big lifts, everybody I talked to was nice and helped when you asked for it. Judging was pretty good, but there were a few that left you scratching your head.

My lower back is fried right now, blood vessels around my eyes popped (I look like I was in a bar fight and lost), and I’ve got equipment-induced bruises all over my chest and arms, but I can’t wait to start my next training cycle. With the right focus on my weak points, I feel I can get my total to 1650 by the next meet.
Great work bro, damn fine PR’s and great write up

Phill

Just want to thank Meat and Skidmark for their recent advice (and Phill and Kalle for previous advice). I hope this week it will look better.

Tomorrow (monday out here): ME Upper.

Gonna do:

Max Flat bench
Inc DB Bench (3x8-10)
Close Grip BB Bench (4x8-10)
90 degree Bent over rows (4x8-10)

and if I “feel like it” OH presses (4x8-10)

Sound ok?

Again, thanks for your help and patience

AD

BTW: I’d like to extend my compliments to all the fine lifts everyone is doing…I kinda feel that (due to my waaaayyy lower lifts) it’s better if I don’t comment otherwise about them.

Either way, you guys and gals are an inspiration.

Good job at the meet, novaeer! It’s always great coming in 1st in your class.

You sure went for a lot of big PRs at the meet, and it looks like you almost had them too. Keep at it and I look forward to you busting 1650 at your next meet!

Thanks, it IS getting better, I like holding the handles towards the back if it is a weight you know you won’t drop. But for me right now not having a good grip the center grip was way more stable. Thats pretty much what I was doing yesterday, lighter sets with a turn. I planned on doing multiple turns in the runs but my first turn with 180 I tweaked something in my upper back a little. It is fine just some strain.

How often do you do farmers? every week? I was thinking about going lighter with turns one week than work on going heavy for max weight for 40ft or so another week. Thoughts?

Just a few on hand, but the meet director had a professional photographer/videographer there and they will be compiling the best attempts for each lifter. Once they’re done, they’ll send us a link and I’ll pass them along. I will post the pics I have once I figure that out. The only real interesting one is where I missed the 3rd DL attempt at the top. My wife told me she was afraid to take more because she thought it would jinx me, so I blame her for that unsuccessful lift

As for letting it all hang out on the 3rd attempts, I went after weights that me and my handler felt I could handle without killing myself, especially on the squat. I wanted the lifts, but I also didn’t want to die. The fact that the back spotter on the squat was 6’3 or so and tipped the scales at around 360 tempered my fears just a bit, LOL.

Hekll yhea your getting better nice work bro. I like the center grip as well ive tried the back grip a bit and even the pick when heavy just isnt right, you can tilt the implements wit a center grip if needed and well when heavy as shit its more important IMO just to hang on you aint going to be flying and having those stable help.

No I havent been doing them weekly ive been alternating between them and the chain yoke seems to work. But i could also see doing them both each week alternating heavy and light. My main issue on event days that limits the number of events I do is im working alone and half my time and energy is spent getting all the sit in and out and loaded etc.

Keep it up

Phill

I’m going to try and attach some pics from the meet. They’re not of the highest quality mind you, but hopefully they get the job done.

I think this first pic is me setting up for my second squat attempt.

This is bench attempt #2 (415 lbs) as the bar is paused on my chest. My gut looks big because I’m pushing out on my belt. Didn’t you hear, I’m a lean 220 now.

Here is bench attempt #3 (450 lbs) just before the bar started to drift back toward the rack. Some scary shit, but the spotters were there to save my neck, literally.

And finally, the coup de grace, my oh-so-close attempt at 550. Lockout for me occurs right at the very extreme bottom of my suit, so I’d say it was 2-3 inches away. It might as well have been a mile. Notice the color of my face and gnashed teeth. Very sexy, eh?

Great meet report and cool pics Novaeer. You guys are gettin this old fart thinking about doing a meet…

the movements are good but the rep scheme for your second ME should be lower. hit both ME’s hard and heavy and then after you can do some higher rep stuff. also, do the rows first and then hit the close grip bench for triceps.

you are on the right track,

great job all around!! I think you did exactly what you needed to do. you are only really competing against yourself anyway. you will crush that shit at the next meet. you were 220 in this meet. you must be 5 feet tall because you look thick as shit. if i weighed 220 i would look like a distance runner and I’m 5’9".

great job!!

Nah, I’m not a hobbit. I’m around 5’8 or 5’9 I’d guess. Remember, the camera adds about 10 lbs, too.
