Westside/PLing Training Thread

06/06/07

MORNING SESSION:

Skipped. For some odd reason, my calves were incredibly sore.

EVENING SESSION:

Clean and Jerk
BAR x 3
40kg x 3
50kg x 2
60kg x 2
70kg x 2
80kg x 1
85kg x MISS

-My coach had me try an advanced technique with the jerk, but I didn’t quite understand it. Not quite ready for it yet.

90kg x 1
96kg x 1 (PR!)
97.5kg x MISS (but PR clean!)
-The clean was inspiring. The jerk, not so much.
97.5kg x MISS
-No juice left.

Power Jerk
65kg x 3
65kg x 3
65kg x 3
65kg x 3
65kg x 2 (out of 3)
-Once again, out of juice.

One-Arm DB Bench
60LBS x 8/side
60LBS x 8/side
60LBS x 7/side

Self-Supported DB Row
60LBS x 8/side
60LBS x 8/side
60LBS x 8/side

Alternating DB Curl
35LBS x 6/side
35LBS x 4/side
30LBS x 6/side

-These are pitiful. Until about a month ago, I was of the “triceps for go, biceps for show” mentality, and therefore did not curl. Then I realized my bicep strength sucked.

Scap Wall Slide
BW x 15
BW x 15

All in all, it was a good session. I want that 100kg clean and jerk really bad and I’m right on it’s tail. Nailing that will be the dog’s dangles.

No worries bro im a frim believer in you scratch my back ill scratch yours. It all works even in the end between friends Right??

Man this is getting BAD LOL

No but progress today by god we were down to the last foot of 120 feet of auger and hit what ever big ass log I let out and its flowing now with any luck will have a shitter and sink saturday the local gas station getting a bit tired of me let alone the neighbors. I have succeeded in killing weeds rotating my watering LOL

man love at it’s best. just make sure one of you gets a reach around. there’s no reason to leave a guy hanging. Phill you still don’t have a shitter? man i bet the neighbor is starting to wonder what he is feeding his dog since he’s been finding unusually large piles of shit in his back yard.

How about we have a Westside sleep over. I’ll bring the KY. wait a minute. that sounds gay doesn’t it?

Like I always say- “just guys being guys”

I’m going to start a new thread within this thread titled-“What I learned today on T-Nation” During my day when i get a chance to sit down I usually read through some of the new threads on T-Nation. I try not to make it a habit of responding to threads outside of ours. But today I couldn’t resist.

There’s a thread titled something to the effect of “What people say about your new physique” I can’t really remember. It’s full of people telling stories of how they are huge and people are just so shocked at their hugeness. But when reading this thread I recieved a totally unexpected jem of a saying that will definitely be in my bag of tricks- “the dogs danglees”.

Let me use it in a sentence. I know this guy that is so cool that he is the dogs danglees. This really struck me as funny. Now maybe it’s just me. considering my favorite saying usually just gets a blank stare from most. Like when someone asks a yes/no question that is obviously a yes answer.

most people would say -“does a bear shit in the woods?” Well, I would say-“does a cat have an ass?” both are definitely yes answers.

maybe I shouldn’t drink a bottle of Captain Morgan and then post on here. I will probably read this tomorrow and say- Huh??

I saw that thread, and just couldn’t bring myself to opening it.

Hell, I say keep drinking, it’s entertaining as hell. Just get your training in first…then again that might make for some good stories as well.

Is that how you keep them there oposums happy? You learn new shit every day. Yesterday I learned how to prepare horse and today it’s how to feed opossums. Us city folk is gettin’ educated. lol.

06/07/07 - Squat (DE)

A) Squat
barx10
135x10
135x5
225x5
275x3
295x2x8

B) Natural GHR on Seated Calf Machine
x8 (suck)
x6 (suck)
x6 (more suck)

C) Hammer Strength Isolateral High Pull
(per side)
45x10
90x8
135x8
160x5x5

D1) Decline Russian Twist
25lb plate
x10
x10
x10

D2) Decline Situp
25lb plate
x15
x15
x15

Squats felt good today, no sign of lower back tightness. I tried Natural GHR’s today facing away from a Seated Calf Raise Machine (similar to doing them on a Lat Pulldown Machine but with a wider seat), and reconfirmed that I still suck at these. I really wish I had access to a GHR, but you gotta make do with what you have or don’t have.

Lats were still sore today from the T-Bar rows on Tues, so I skipped Chinups but went 5x5 on the Hammerstrength. I’m not sure why I thought this would be better, but I’m sure they will be screaming again tomorrow.

DE Lower
Manta Ray Box squat
97.5kg 10 sets of 2 reps

Speed Deadlift 85kg 8 sets of 1 rep

Bul split squat with DB’s
bw 1x6
10 1x6
14 1x6
12 1x6

45 degree back ext
bw 1x12
10 1x12
15 1x12
20 1x12

Just got a manta ray pad today, so decided to use it for the speed squats. Definitely harder pound for pound than normal box squats due to the higher centre of gravity.

Going to get chains involved next week, not used them before so looking forward to it. Just waiting for delivery of Louie Simmons Reacitve Method DVD, then im off down the hardware store!

Pyramiding weightx5’s are not working. Been feeling weaker in these lifts even though the numbers on ME days are still going up. Going back to 5x3’s which do seem to work for me.[/quote]

You could try waving the weights instead of pyramiding them. Usually makes things feel much easier!

Then I left, no energy and wasn’t really feeling the workout. Will do some extra upper back, ab and grip work for an assistance day.

AHHHH! I am going crazy, I am so pumped right now for Saturday, I am having trouble staying calm and relaxed which is best at this point, little nervous to, I will be driving up to weigh in and everything tommarow morning.

Shouldn’t be a problem as I am at about 200 at the very end of the day in my shorts.

Was a fast w/o in and out very minimal rest

Just usual assistance day of late

Of note went light lower body its shot from the crazy squatting session kept very light high rep same for lower back work. If no Id have to take some of meats super recovery suggestions to get my event day in.

Made progress on bad arm bumped DB presses to 45 lbs in that arm for 4 sets 12 and added 2 extra sets for it same load higher rep

Bumped the rowing to 50 lbs in that hand and again extra volume

Bumped the curling up to 25 lbs in that hand had to keep steady

Added on some extra shoulder work today just various raises. Feeling OK in general tendon still tight but getting better

Putting some of the weight back on Im around 230 so up a good 5 lbs

making great progress with the arm! you will be doing deads in no time.

great job!

My training partner is out of town so I won’t be hitting the gym until monday. you have enough volume in your training for both of us.

Thanks guys, I am calmed down right now eating a big ass bowl of chicken. Yes Phill I will challenge it but during the show not two days before!

Nice 5 hour drive ahead of me tommarow morning yay! No big deal though I drive 1,200 miles a week.

Don’t be suprised to see me post while in route though, bad habit but my truck is setup like an office, laptop on a adjustable mount over center console, 600 watt power inverter verizon wireless internt… lol got to love cruise control.

Hey guys, really enjoying reading this thread. Just completed my 1st PL meet, and I’m learning a ton from all. My question - been doing GM’s with an arched lower back, what kind of ROM should I be aiming for? I set the pins in the rack at the same height as for back squats, and bend at the hips until my back is basically parallel to the floor and the bar just about or even lightly touching the pins.

I do these as an ME Lower exercise, usually up to a couple heavy doubles or triples, but never singles. Some videos I’ve seen of GM’s show guys with a much shorter ROM, but really heavy weights. What I’m doing seems to be working, but wondering ?
