Meat’s Meet

The good, the bad and the ugly…

Well, I could write a book on the things that I learned from my first meet. I will try to just hit the highlights though.

First off, I learned that I can’t add weight with 100 lb plates thrown into the mix. I kept checking and rechecking to make sure mine and my buddies attempts were correct.

I competed in the 275’s open and sub master’s (35-39). I just turned 35. ( I guess I’m old now). My buddy competed in the master’s 40-49 division. Originally I only wanted to do the bench for my first meet, but as I will explain later i did a half-assed attempt in the dead.

I ended up spotting for the squat event. my buddy won his division for squat. Then we moved on to the bench. The bench sat way low and the uprights were very narrow. The bar was also a lot thicker than the one I train with. Regardless, I opened with 455-it was a breeze, went to 495 and that shot up. The record in the open division is 510, I decided to go to 520. I brought the weight down just a little too high on my chest and, nope no dice. So, I finished with 495 which was enough to win the open and submasters division. Actually 495 set the record for the submasters as well. I should have settled for going for 515 but I’m stupid. Next time.

On to the deads. Everyone went through their warmups. I was somewhat upset with myself for missing 520, so i asked if i could do an attempt. The judge said yes. All I needed to set the record was 585 so that’s what I did with no warmup. Stupid I know, but oh well.

My buddy set a record in the bench and squat but missed his third attempt in the dead.

At the end of the day, I set the record in the submasters with a 495 bench and 585 dead and won the open and submaster’s. My buddy won the master’s division (40-49).

Next time I will do the full meet and hopefully hit 520 (or more) and make sure to go through the warmups and hopefully pull close to 700.

It was a great experience and met some great guys.

Nice job on your first meet! Hope mine goes as well.

495 sounds pretty sweet to me! you’ll have that 520 next time.

Event/conditioning march 30th

Just doing something meds had me a lil loopy ill just put the somewhat highlights

Started with plyo jumps , cable abs and db snatch

Plyos worked to a few at 34? these were a bit harder without the arm drive

DB snatch 100 x 3 then an ugly 110 first time doing these with any weight felt good

Then tried loading things one handed wasn?t going to happen everything I got is to light or to heavy/big and awkward

One arm tire flipping did 21 rest pause just get em done on 21 had to keep fighting from trying to use bad casted arm so stopped there these were good made me really drive into it.

Drag keg 200lber x a lot not sure how much forward backward sideways etc, 300lb keg by 60 feet or so that suckers tough

Few other suitcase carries and a 35lb db overhead for well a long time until fatigued really hit the stabilizers etc

Ok w/o

Phill

good shit meat–i couldnt make it down…there…sounds like one of the best first meets i’ve ever heard of…so when’s the next one?

Meat, mad respect. Nice job man!

thanks to everyone for the support!!

I forgot to mention that since I wasn’t planning on doing deads I was wearing boxers under my shorts. I pull sumo and as I was coming up on my attempt my boxers ripped all the way up to the waste band. It was loud and some thought that it was a hammy ripping.

I feel comfident that the squat and dead won’t be a problem but I’m going to really hammer the 1, 2 board, dumbell presses and floor presses. What sucks about competing is you have to be perfect. If you have a form issue in the gym you can miss a lift and then turn around and hit it, not in competition. I’m also going to hammer my lats to help keep my decent more consistant. I find that as the weight gets close to a max, I don’t always bring it down in the exact same path. Many things to fix…

At the latest, my next meet will be August but maybe I can find another raw meet before then.

I’m going to get out and drag the sled tomorrow. I think I will need it.

thanks again to everyone. I really appreciate it.

Also,Phill, I know today must have been hard knowing that you should have been out competing but I’m sure when the time is right you will be unstoppable.

We have a nice little disfunctional family growing here.

Geez Meat, sounds like you really got a lot of stuff to work on. I wish I had all your problems lol. For real though, I like your approach to lifting. You are very self critical and never satisfied with your progress. I think that is a big factor in what separates average and good athletes from the great ones. You are also knowledgeable enough to know what needs to be fixed and that goes a long ways as well.

Geez, you’re gone for a couple days and all kinds of shit happens!

Cristina, hope I spelled your name right, welcome to the thread!

Meat, nice job at your meet. You know you’re strong enough for the 520. You’ll show it next time. I’ll be sure not to pull 585 (or the equivalent of it for me) w/o a warmup, as funny as that is.

3/30/07 DE Bench

A)DE Bench=135 + dbl minis x 3 x 10, three different grips

B)Flat DB Bench=110 x 13

C)Wide, semi-sup pullup=BW x 6 x 3, 3 x 2

D)Close-Grip Decline BB=175 x 12, 12, 7

NOTES: It had been nine days since I had trained, so all in all I was happy with this workout. The speed work went very well.

Doing one long set of DB presses close to failure right after the speed work is something I’m trying for now. I don’t think I read it anywhere, it just seems like something I should do. I think I’m at the point where I can get a lot out of one set of moderately heavy presses, especially after lighting up that whole movement pattern with 10 sets of speed bench right before.

3/31/07 ME Lower

A)ME Squat
Bar x 8
135 x 5
185 x 3
225 x 3
275 x 3
315 x 1
365 x 1
385 x 1
405 x 1
420 x 1 x 3

B)RDL=325 x 5 x 3

C)“Natural” G/H Raises=6 x 2

D)Hanging Pike=8 x 2

I then proceeded to drink some Surge while walking around the basketball gym, doing two sets of 20 pushups and the same of some band pull-aparts to unstuff my shoulder girdle from yesterday’s workout.

NOTES: Squats were deep, clean and easy. I think 9 days was too much time off, but I did get all the little kinks out w/ lots of foam rolling, mobility work and a 90 minute massage from my sadistic deep tissue masseuse. It showed today on the squats. I thought about going for a 5 lb. PR, but decided to hit a higher volume of singles close (97%) to my max.

Something didn’t feel right when I woke up this morning. I may have slept on my arm wrong or something. I should have backed off but I was an idiot and decided to push it. It felt fine during the entire range of motion except for the handoff portion. Odd. I know. I’m taking 3 days off this week to head up to gainesville and see my girly and I’m having ART done tomorrow or tuesday. This time I’ll just get both shoulders done.

Can you guys give me some pointers with my bench?
