Doing meets isn’t the holy grail or anything. I thought it was something I wanted to do, until I was actually training for it. It was stressful, a huge commitment, and it kind of makes me hate training.Do meets, don’t do meets. Whatever you want.I don’t get the big deal with pushing people towards competing. This was part of the reason I had to leave my powerlifting club, you HAD to compete to be a member, and I didn’t want to compete. There is really nothing wrong with training and getting stronger on your own terms.
Just my .02, of course[/quote]
I mostly agree with you. However, we put a lot of that stress on ourselves. I know tons of lifters who don’t get themselves so worked up for it, mainly because they keep their expectations of themselves in line.
I do cherry pick my meets, though, especially when times are tough and staying employed is my main priority. Doesn’t look well when I show up Monday after a meet with both eyes full of blown blood vessels, lol. But that is the gearwhore in me as well. Doing a meet raw should be much less stressful, esp if you are just competing against yourself.

I’m the reverse. I like training and have only done a few meets but I’ve always liked game day better than practice. To me it just seems like powerlifting without doing a meet is like going to football practice but skipping the games.
I’m with Joe, always perform better in a meet. I find it very motivating, having goal and then actually trying to meet it. I’ve gotten to cherry picking my meets also recently. Git, do a meet.
Good work though Git, especially in hotel workout rooms. Enjoy the travel and be safe!
Since I finally did a meet, it was very stressful in the weeks leading to the meet, however I do feel that my training took a different and more direct approach, It was great to train for something, for me it worked and would like to compete at least twice a year. However I will not get sooo worked up for it, will not get caught up in the minutia and not put so much stock in it, that wasnt fun.
Git I do think you should consider doing one so you can see for yourself…
Hotel training FTW! Most cats don’t even motivate enough to go more than once. End of the month, I’ll start living 2 out of every 3 weeks in hotels and/or man camps, going to work for an oilfield services company. I may need to borrow your motivation then, so keep it fresh, wouldja?

2 out of 3 weeks? That is going to require some training flexbility and focus. You can do it.
Flight out of Trinidad was delayed 3 hours (something about the Captain’s oxygen tank being empty…what?) meaning I missed my connecting flight in Houston. Staying overnight here, then to Newark tomorrow and home by 5pm. Worst flight schedule ever. Start to finish = 36 hours.
Not sure of there will be training tomorrow evening of not.
