A noob question: how much do you rest between sets on main lift?

Whatever it takes to get the job done - probably 3-6 minutes or so. Why rush through this?[/quote]

An old BB habit: 45 sec to 1 min of rest max (to get the “pump”, accumulate lactate, increase GH, or another catchy phrase:). Today I tried DL with 3 min, got 9 reps on last set of 3!!!
By the way, your program rules!

I have about 10 million things planned. I just have to get everything in order. I think the Yoke manual will be next. I have some pretty cool stuff planeed out that I really think will help people; things that will cut through some of the B.S. that seems to confuse everyone. Does anyone have any suggestions?

How about a guide to understanding women? They confuse me.

How about your own version of Dave’s “27 Reasons to be big”. Some people need a refresher.

Or you could just do the Yoke Manual. That would be just as good. I guess.

I have women all figured out - if you want to know the secret, let me know.

Crosses fingers Please tell me it involves Kodiak and Jimmy Beam…

Jim, have you noticed your performance on the assistance work suffering on your “5” day for the deadlifts??

I’ve never liked pulling for reps, got 10 today on my second wave and it just about left me for dead. Had to cut the volume of my assistance work in half to make it thru the rest of the session, and even that was a challenge. I assume this is ok?

Happens all the time. You got better today, that is all that matters.

Let me relate a story to you. Dave was at Westside and a world record holder in the bench press was packing up his bag and getting ready to leave. Dave asked him if he was going to do any extensions or pushdowns. His answer - “What the hell is a pushdown going to do for me after I just 3 board pressed 765lbs plus bands?”

Now you can’t always adopt this attitude but judging by the questions I get, 99% of people are WAY more concerned with assistance work than the squat, bench, deadlift, clean or press. 100% of their thought goes into what the perfect exercise is for their “weak points” rather than focusing on what might actually make them stronger. This doesn’t answer your question or really pertain to it, but it gave me a good platform to preach from.

In short, sometimes it’s best to leave when you should.

Alright, good to hear. Thanks Jim.

I’ve heard that story before… can definitely see the reasoning behind it. Sometimes it’s just hard to get your head around one all out set being enough to progress!! I’ve kept the intensity of my assistance work relatively low and volume high so it lets me push that bit harder on the main lift and not have to worry about not getting thru my assistance work (which I guess should never really be a worry anyway!!).

Glad I gave ya a platform!!

Jim,

Sat morning I did my military press 5/3/1 of my 3rd cycle. Then as saturday went on I became pretty sick, sunday wrecked, today much better, and I think ill be feeing pretty good by tomorrow. I have a flu type thing going on.

I’ve been getting in the liquids and forcing myself to eat even if I haven’t felt like it. Maybe lost 1-2lbs at most.

I know you can’t tell me what I should do with certainty, but if I’m feeling normal tomorrow, would you suggest I go right as planned with my 5/3/1 deadlift day?

(Just so I’m being clear I mean the days that go 5/3/1 on the reps, not just any day in the program)

Thanks

Broke another PR today, btw.

However, a kind of OT question. I cock my hands back when I bench. I feel like it makes me lose power. I have tiny ass joints, and I think that’s part of the problem. Is there much I can do to fix this other then wear wrist wraps?

Squeezing the bar tighter may help.

What’s wrong with wrist wraps?

nothing, but I feel like since I have an inadaquicy (sp, too tired to care) I should work on that too, and it might help me bench more weight.

Go for it. If you feel shitty, can the workout.

thanks Jim. turns out im still not 100%. i probably have the fucking swine flu. what really sucks is for like the past year or more it hurts like shit throughout my chest/arms every time i sneeze. being sick, im sneezing like its my job…its like im getting my ass kicked all day. definitely didnt do deadlifts today…

Just started the program yesterday with press, I actually took 10% off all my maxes so these felt really light, but I am in this for the long haul.

Good. You’re supposed to take 10% off. I originally didn’t and it caught up to me.

I don’t know if I should really only add 5 pounds to press and bench and 10 to squat and dead each cycle. I know that is what you are supposed to do, but it would take me the whole summer to just get back to using my current maxes.

If you’re really going to do this program for the long haul, only add the 5 and 10. You don’t have to work with your maxes to get stronger.

I know, I know, everyone keeps talking about how well this thing works, and that is why I decided to go with it. It just doesn’t feel normal, I almost feel like a bodybuilder, which is a really bad thing to me.

Just out of curiosity, how many reps did you hit on your last set of presses yesterday?

I got 10 reps, with one or two in the tank, which seems pretty normal from reading this thread.
