Jim, what’s happened to Rhodes he was looking a bit skinny in the UGSS videos?[/quote]
dude, you should have seen him at 330lbs. He was fucking MISERABLE. He was hating life and couldnt really do shit. The weight loss helped him with a bunch of that. That, and hes a marfan.
After taking a break from 5/3/1 to diet down a little bit, I’m ready to get back at it. I’ve always DL-ed conventionally, but I am thinking of making the switch to Sumo for a variety of reasons. The most important reason, and why I’m posing the question, is because I want more hip work that will translate over to my squat.
I can see DL-ing sumo for a long time, so it’s not a whim. So my question is whether others using the 5/3/1 DL sumo, and if they’ve any advice or thoughts insofar as whether sumo style helps or hurts their squat. Much appreciated.
Know this thread is geared towards to strength training but i was wondering how much muscle hyperthrophy have any of you guys gained on the 531 program and on which template BBB, Trivirumate etc
P.S Also a proud owner of the awesome ebook =)

I’ve put on some great size and also made significant body comp changes using BBB.

Sumo will be fine. As far as translating to your squat that just depends on where your weaknesses lie and how wide you squat. All you can do is try for a couple waves and see what it does for you. For instance, some people love good mornings and it translates well to their squat/dead, for me they do very little. Good luck!

yes, that happend to me too, expecially when I train naked LOL, I`m doing BBB too and I feel great.
I just finish my 5 cycle
I love this program.
I compete equipped and have been going well RAW using the 5/3/1 template first using the 3day version and later when the actual book came out used the 4 day version of 5/3/1. I have a MEET in DEC the AAU nationals in Nevada.
So here is my plan. I will slowly start to reduce my accessory work as I near DEC and on my 95%x1 day instead of going for reps I will do the 1 rep and suit up and test work towards my openers. Still working out what type of rep range I will use for the suited work.
This is going to be new ground for me but around September I will start to drop accessory work and November suit up.
My best numbers so far in a meet are:
550 squat
530 dead
440 Bench
All rounded down.
My 5/3/1 working (adjusted down from actual 1rep max) numbers are (right now):
MP- 220
Deadlift-(485)
Bench-(375)
Squat-435
Still working out the kinks of my above plan let me add I think I will be doing my shirted lifts off a 3/2 board working down to the meet reps and lbs are still being worked on. Will have a better idea after my Aug 95%x1 week.
Ok, I am looking for some assistance here. I love the 5/3/1 program, but I have three powerlifting meets in the next 4 months. One in about two weeks, another the first week of October and the last one the first week of November. These are all international meets and I am trying to get my strength back after my treatments. With all that in mind this style of training is great for me, but I am going to have to be in equipment for training. So, I am looking for suggestions.
I was thinking of using rep scheme of 3/2/1 and the BBB for assistance with maybe a couple of other assistance exercises thrown in to work on specific weaknesses. Between the first and second meet I will have 7 weeks of training, and between the second and third I will have four weeks…
i’m trying the 531 rep scheme for bench/row and mil press/pull up. what i mean is using the rep scheme for the row and pull up assistance work. unfortunately (or not haha) my weights for the pull ups haven’t been going up that much because my bodyweight is going up!
my girlfriend is doing the 531 too! she’s pretty new to the weights, and i think it’s great for her to have such a structured plan. it makes it easy for her to progress, and takes the guesswork out of training. plus, it ensures she keeps pushing herself.

Just out of curiousity how have your workouts in cycle 2 and 3 gone because I would like to run the BBB for a few cycles and am interested to hear how your body reacted to the same exercises for every workout.

Personally, once my body got used to the volume, it responded very well. Now, keep in mind you could do BBB with a variation. For instance, follow conventional deads with snatch grip, deficit, or even sumo deads for the 5X10. I haven’t done that yet, but may. What I found was I got in better “lifting shape”, it’s like doing cardio only with weights. It particularly paid off for me because I do strongman, and you need to have that muscular endurance for some events. So it serves as a conditioning tool.

The BBB template has this conditioning efect for me too, not only for getting in better “lifting shape” but also in better “fighting shape”. I like using variations as you mentioned: i close the stance a bit for the sets of 10 in the front squats(i use front squat as core lift) and do romanians with the deads, now i started BBB for upper body and i’m trying close grip for bench.
A question for you (and others): how long are you doing the BBB template? I’m really stuck on this template for squats, because of the results and its hardcoreness, but sometimes i feel i’m on it for too long (or maybe i’m just brainwashed that i must change routines every often).
I just finished my first cycle . went O.K. , except I started way too heavy on squats . deads went well and bench too ; military press went great . I see big gains coming on MP due to not regularily training that lift in the past .
the other issue I ran into was lower back recovery. I started with BBB , using high-rack pulls on deadlift day and front squat on squat day . I did this on 3x5 and 3x3 wave , but gave it up come 5/3/1 wave . went all out on deads those first two waves , and my back was still stiff and unable to get loosened up come squat day …and again the following DL day . that could be part of the poor performance squatting…that and being a bit rusty/out of groove . I loved doing the BBB , but its entirely possible that my conditioning isnt up to snuff with the program .
BBB felt fantastic on upper body days . and the upper back felt good too …high rack pulls rock .
so this next time I’m thinking of sticking to the prescribed reps on DL day with BBB assistance (partials); hopefully allowing for a better squat day , which will be with BBB assistance (good mornings) . if thats still no good then I’ll have to drop assistance work on DL day to 3x10/Triumvirate or nothing at all .
last set reps were as follows…
mil press…11,9, and 10
deadlift…8,7, and 5
bench…13,10, and 8
squat…5,5, and 3 (this was AFTER a severe 1st wave train wreck and the subsequent resetting of the maxes)
all that are interested- i just put up a facebook group page for 5/3/1. i discussed this briefly with Jim beforehand, just to get the “ok” from him as i respect that this is his thing, and i wouldnt have put it up there without his permission.
anyway, if you search groups “Jim Wendler 5/3/1” you should be able to find it.
and fwiw, im not trying to hug Jim’s nuts or anything, although i do love the program. just trying to spread the 5/3/1 around, and hopefully inspire more to actually buy the book, instead of just getting the cliff’s notes off here and other sites.
