Thing is, part of it is just nostalgia for days gone by. I don’t know that I NEED to be doing more than this. Being a better deadlifter in the past just meant I was a good deadlifter. It didn’t carry over so much, or have much aesthetic impact.
Put another way, it probably isn’t worth the risk any more, not at this age. I will probably just try to be decent at sub 200 lifting.
I’ve made my mind up quite a while ago that once I hit my 2/3/4/5 plates, I’m done. That’s all I need to do, strength wise. I have no goals in life that would be helped by being stronger than that.
I’ve done 5 plates a grand total of once. I’ll let you in on a secret though, the day after I did it I was walking down the street and not a single person came up to me and commented on my deadlift. It was strange.
Ain’t that the truth? It’s great to be able to lift heavy stuff, but it doesn’t mean a whole lot to anyone that doesn’t lift. I’d rather be great at life and good at lifting instead of the other way round. 1RM’s have some carryover to “real” life, but being able to run, carry, and do continuous work have much more carryover. Will my goofy ass still push for 1RM advancement? Yes, but not really at the expense of the other 3 things mentioned above.
Regarding lifting heavy, I’ve always used the mantra “I don’t care how much effort it will take to move this biotch, but I know EXACTLY how much effort I’m gonna use”. Thinking about speed tends to mess me up and get me hurt. Just brace like hell and don’t let the brace go, and then push like hell. If you don’t release the brace, you’re probably not at an egregious risk of injury.
My new fire pit seating wouldn’t have been possible without my deadlift strength. I had to tire flip the bigger one to the truck. It was heavier and more awkward than my 280 lb tire that I use for fun.
Weird day today. 100 was the target, guess I got 14 reps there last cycle. Wasn’t laser focused like I usually am, and it showed. Probably more in a hurry than I like to be.

One-Arm Dumbbell Row
27 kg x 6 reps
34 kg x 6 reps
42 kg x 20 reps
Also did a bunch of quick cable rows and some DB delt flyes.
Anyway, hit 15 reps, but it felt like shit from start to finish. A sloppy grind. Must be close to a rep PR, but nothing I feel proud of.
Oh, and bumped the inclines up to 60. Also a crappy grind.
Also sorta tweaked my lower back on that kroc row set up there. Don’t think it is anything serious, but a reminder that I need to brace myself better.
Yeah, I just like to vent. That’s partly what a log is for, no? I can also take some solace in the fact that even if I feel shit about it, I ran the program by the numbers. Which is the most important part at the end of the day.
Yeah, I know it comes off that way. My frustration in this case is that the quality of the reps were poor, or felt poor, and so while it checks the box for being a decent AMRAP, I don’t feel like it was real progress. The AMRAP stuff is kinda sloppy by definition at the % I am using, because half the battle is a fight against TUT. And while this is a deliberate choice on my part, I don’t want it to be TOO sloppy, because then I know it will not translate well when I stop doing this crap and start lifting a bit heavier.
And well, I have minor issue in my lower back now as well, so that has me fairly grumpy, too.
