Weight Training for Baseball

Hi,

This is my first post on here but here goes.

I am a 18 year old high school pitcher/first basemen.

Can any one give me some info on lifting that won’t make me to tight to pitch, but will help in making me stronger and look better for the ladies.

PS I am 6’5 220 pounds.

Thanks,
Roy

roy,
don’t worry about being “tight to pitch”, find a good program, eat well and hit the weight room. make sure you are doing internal/external work, remember to stretch!!!, and stay on a year round throwing program. you will gain strength, speed on your fast ball, endurance in your legs and a body for the ladies to look at.

I think any serious athlete should look into Coach Davies’ stuff…it isn’t designed to make you “look good for the ladies” but chances are that you will look better anyway. More importantly, it will enable you to become a better baseball player.

Coach Davies material. Eat it up with a shovel. Forget hypertrophy type training. I would incorporate overhead squats, overhead lunges, sprints, Pavels full contact twist, full straight legged raise to the bar. Towel chins of various widths, handstand pushups. Looking good for the ladies? Well, thats another thing. You may find that with your functional training and the confidence and air you have with your increased ability, you will be a chick magnet.

i wouldnt really follow jays advice. lots of programs are benching heavy, and benching and pitchin most often don’t mix as afar as the rotator is concerned. go on a deadlift and row heavy program…

Christ at your size, you better be throwin serious heat there youngin. Functional hypertrophy is the only hypertrophy I would recommend. Work on being an ATHLETE. That means flexibility, speed, power, are things you need to work on. Dont become a gym rat in the sense of doing worthless lifts. Do lifts that will have the best carryover into your sport. Rotational Training is a must. Pavel’s full contact twist is thumbs up on my list. Also the turkish get-up.

dman,
i agree with you that a bench heavy program could have adverse affects on the shoulder but if you take care of them, and throw you should be fine. in fact rodger clemens benches before every start, he is also religious with his shoulder work.
but to each his own, work those legs and core muscles roy.

Roy-

Where do you live. I know of some great baseball training programs you could get involved in.

i played pro ball for six years…the thing i would tell you to focus on is your core and your legs. as far as your upper body, i would stick to dumbbells as i have found that it helped maintain my flexibility. during the off-season you can use more barbell but give yourself enough time before the season starts to get your flexibility back. as for some earlier posts about throwing year round, i concur with that as it will help with the flexibility issues.
