Hey all,
Looking for some advice to help my boyfriend lose weight. He’s struggled with hypothyroidism all his life. At 5’8" and 235 lbs., he’s considered obese, even with the development of muscles. He’s no slouch – he runs daily, and lifts weights from fall through to spring (does it at home and it’s too hot in the summer). He’s very active, but cannot seem to drop the fat. His diet is also pretty clean, could use a little improvement, but on the whole he eats better than the general population.
What can be done to help him? Any advice? Questions? Tips? Etc?
Thanks!
How old is he?
If he is over 18 he could try HOT-ROX Extreme (a product sold by the owners of this website). It has been shown to elevate thyroid hormone levels.
Has he seen a doctor and is he taking anything for the hypothyroidism now?
He’s 32. He’s taking 0.05 mg of Synthroid (Levothyroxine Na) once per day. He has been seeing his doctor and is getting blood work done again within a month.
I am not a doctor, but I still think the HOT-ROX would be a good idea. Ideally he should talk with his doctor about using it at the same time as his current medication or instead of the current medication, however I know many doctors are very resistant to supplements.
I have seen homeopathic mixtures for low thyroid but I cannot speak for how well those work.
Hopefully someone else who is more familiar with your boyfriend’s medication can toss in their 2 cents here.
too hot to lift weights? in Canada?
lol Yes, we do have warm weather. Our summers have been really muggy and sticky, very humid. It’s raining but the heat is still sticky, so perspiration is not easy, which means the body doesn’t cool down.

So he’s lazy and unmotivated? No wonder he can’t cut down.

He is neither lazy nor unmotivated. As I ssaid before, he runs daily and lifts weights from fall to spring. His condition, which causes a decrease in the hormones that regulate the metabolism, interfere with weight loss. Weight gain in itself is one of the symptoms of hypothyroidism. It’s a hormonal disturbance, not a lack of effort or motivation.
My question is whether anyone has had any experience with it and if they can give me any suggestions for him that might help get some of the weight off.

If he lacks the ability to lift weights in the summer because the heat makes him uncomfortable, I can easily see why he wouldn’t be able to lose fat. It’s too hot to lift in the summer, my thyroid problems make me fat…I get it. People like to rationalize things they don’t want to do.
Is he medicated for his hypothyroid? I have hypothyroid and as long as I am medicated properly then it really doesn’t affect me in the least.
