Pulver-Swanson was disappointing, especially after all the trash talk between the two leading up to the fight. Sometimes, though, you just get caught and there’s nothing you can do. Credit Pulver for sinking in the choke.
I don’t think he can beat Faber but it should draw a good rating nontheless.

The stop on Sonnen was questionable. I couldn’t tell if he was screaming “NO, NO” as in I’m not going to tap or just screaming “OH SHIT” because his arm was breaking. Destined to be debated for the next 6 years.
And Jens Pulver put it on Swanson. Not a punch thrown, sick looking choke. In only 35 seconds.
I don’t think I’ve ever seen a better choke than Pulvers. I am pretty excited to watch this organization grow. If they keep UFC bs out, I don’t think it will be long before they are the most popular organization. If Dana keeps pissing his fighters off I bet all the good ones will be in the WEC before long.
I can’t wait to see Faber vs. Pulver. It’s been awhile since I’ve been really excited about a fight. They have been so boring in the UFC for the last few years.

WEC is owned by Zuffa, so the net result will be the same. The cage is smaller and there is no heavy and super classes so they are really just creating a seperate market.
I was disappointed in the Pulver fight, too. Especially given all the anger going into it. The card was pretty entertaining, though.
Did anyone catch Sports Unfiltered after the fight? I like Dennis Miller anyway, but thought it was a pretty cool format. I will be DVRing it from now on.

I didn’t realize they were owned by Zuffa, but I still think they would do well to keep the UFC bs out.
I do realize they have a slightly different set up but would imagine that the differences are designed more for market penetration than for a permanent model.

Pulver’s choke was great, but I was pissed that they called it a anaconda choke when it looked like a Chancery or ten finger guillotine. I’d have to rewatch it, but no way in hell it was an anaconda. Also cool to Faber busting out the Peruvian necktie that DeSouza has brought into vogue.

That was a ten finger guillotine, I believe Mir said so while it was happening.

What are the thoughts on the yellow cards from Pride? Like or dislike?
Dislike. Some of these guys make shit anyways, you shouldn’t give the officials power to take money from their purses for failing to perform the task of entertainment which is purely subjective.
Without the financial penalties attached that the Pride system entailed, I think the idea has some merit. Here’s my thing: With the current, relatively clear cut MMA system in place, they still manage to fuck up officiating and judging all the time. Officiating not so much anymore, judging still sucks though.
Adding other elements to it like yellow cards is just creating windows for disastrous misuse. The officials have have the ability to give warnings and take points, which is sufficient for now I think. Rarely do I see a UFC fight and go “YELLOW CARD THAT M-FER!” If you can get off your back, then damn son, you should have worked on that more. Don’t hate the player.
You’re definitely correct in stating that Pulver’s sub was not an anaconda choke. I believe it was the 10-finger guillotine; at least it appeared that way from the angle they showed on TV.
Frank Mir is a great color commentator. He doesn’t yell or get overly excited. He calls the action correctly and does a good job in educating the audience to what’s happening in the cage. His post-fight interviews aren’t the greatest, but he’ll get better over time.
Todd Harris, the play-by-play guy isn’t that bad, either. He’s obviously not an expert at MMA, but you can see that he’s learning more and more each broadcast. I definitely prefer these guys to Golderberg-Rogan.
I think Frank Mir and Mauro Ranallo would be the best thing going in the booth in MMA. This wasn’t Mir’s best commentary, he seemed overly excited at times and was pushing the “WEC THE THE BEST” angle which he never really has before. I could also do without the Faber worship. The man is a great fighter, he doesn’t need you telling us that every 3 seconds. But yeah, Mir is solid.

Jens is pretty old. Who else is there at 145 for Faber to fight? He’s a big name, might as well use him now.
There are a bunch of guys Faber should fight. The Curran fight was probably the first time Faber fought a top ten featherweight. There still are a couple of guys more accomplished at feather. Though they all fight in Shooto, if there was a top ten and you include Faber and Curran the other eight are fighting in Shooto.
I honestly think Sonnen meant to say “no”, but in the heat of the moment and with his arm getting crank he sure as shit yelled “TAP!”. Great reffing, I’m sick of the poor guy getting flak, and also Sonnen needs to lay off his whining.
