Watching Smallville?
Professor X wrote:
We LOVE soap operas…as long as they don’t look like soap operas

Thats the problem though, as Smallville progressed it steadily LOOKED more and more like a soap. Especially the latest seasons, with everyone seemingly nearly crying all the time and all the drama, and the soft indoor lighting and the close-ups on the faces.

Soap is ok, and I can accept a certain amount of it, since it adds to the drama (to a certain extent; too much and it gets to “soap-y” if-know-what-i-mean), but there needs to be a corresponding amount of action and adventure, especially in a super-powered world, to keep me captivated. And the ratio of soap-to-action kept increasing in the way of soap and decreasing in the way of action, to the point where I just couldn’t take it anymore.

Is season 10 any better about being more-action and less-soap?

(And this isn’t to say that after Smallville is all over, I’m not going to buy the entire series on DVD and watch every episode all over again, just like I did with Buffy. I’ll just know ahead of time there are going to be some boring soapy episodes I’ll have to struggle through.)

along the lines of the Black Friday thread, I believe it was Best Buy that had every season on sale for $10. anyone pick them up?

Yeah, but even when that happened he didn’t act like he does when they use more of it and it wasn’t around him for long. They stole those blue prints from Lex. Maybe they didn’t make it as strong. When he is really hit by it, it shows in green veins on his face. That didn’t happen.
I see what you are saying but they seemed to have done away with that green veins effect all together. In general lately they have shown him use powers and not be completely vulnerable when Kryptonite is around.

I think its a good move. In the past he was always completely helpless when there was kryptonite present. Even when there was a kryto rock sitting next to him when he was laying on the ground he wouldn’t be able to nudge it away from him with his boot let alone use an ability. There is nothing wrong with that but the show has done the helpless clark so many times that it seems they are showing it hurt him and compromize his powers/vulnerablilty but they are not completely gone. He can help himself to try and find a solution where as before he would have to wait for rescue or a freak luck event that would get rid of the kryptonite.

1)The exploding cave above was one example… you didnt know if he would make it but he did.
2)The cult farmers or whatever was another example of how the blue kryptonite flame did not kill him even though it was made of blue kryptonite which should take his powers away and was hot enough to kill Lois. Him taking a hit like that for the team would not of been an option a few years ago.
3)Lets not forget the season premiere. He was stabbed in the chest with a blue kryotonite knife. Lets forget about the chest wound for a second… according to the old rules the blue kryptonite should of made him completely human with no abilities or invulnerability but yet he then fell off a skyscraper and lived.
4)Another example was when the orphanage lady had him. He was tied up in chains which he could not break but he was able to use his heat vision to close the krptonite container and escape. No green veins again.

I think there are a few more examples if you think of any. I like all these changes and i think they contribute to why everyone is saying this season is so good. It takes a lot of the predictability out of it. The helpess clark has been done to death. In their vision, the Superman that Clark is becoming is not a helpless little bitch but tough. Even with Krytonite.

I believe you’re reffering to gold kryptonite on taking his powers blue kryptonite only effects bizzarros.

Well, on Smallville it takes his powers away…and they already did Bizarro and I liked how they made him as a failed Clark clone.

Much better than Best Buy.

Does anybody have any inside scoop on Alison Mack? I know the official deal is that she left the show but agreed to apear in a few episodes this season to tie up her character. Which she did. Maybe she’ll return for a show or two at the end of the season. I just don’t get it though.

She stuck around when Lana and Lex left the show. She toughed it out for 9 seasons! Why would you leave when you know season 10 is the last? Was it money? Did she think she could do 9 seasons but avoid being type cast by skipping the 10th? I’d love to know the real deal with this one.

I didn’t realize until this thread Lex left the show, hence them writing him off. Didn’t realize the same thing happened with Lana. wonder how things would have turned out otherwise.

Her character does not exist in “Superman’s world” once he grows up. She was either going to leave the show or get written off somewhere down the line. When “Chloe” was created, I seriously doubt they expected her to have her own fan base a few years later.

Didn’t they end up introduced her into the comics recently?

Yeah, but to my knowledge, in the same way they treat Pete’s character. She may show up later briefly, but she doesn’t work at the Daily Planet or anything.

Fair enough. I need to catch up on my Superman this Christmas, haven’t read any in ages.

B.

Agreed. Still, I would of thought she would stay a regular and then have to die or get the ol’ amnesia trick at the end of the season to tie up her character. Maybe your right… maybe it was a good change for the last season to get rid of her rather than a contract dispute or something.

She also can’t run “watchtower” because doesn’t Bat Girl take control of that in the future when she becomes “Oracle” after being paralyzed?

Someone else will have to answer that because I have not followed commics since like 1989. Superman was my favorite as you mentioned earlier. Same generation. I did go out and get the doomsday comics when there was all that hype they were going to kill superman. What a putz i was. Probably the least valuable superman comic ever. lol.

SPOILER-------------- interesting now that Lionel is back, but is he going to be the same version in the alternate universe? hmmmm. Or will he just simply stay hidden, because you would think at some point people in the Metropolis, would be like “he died, WTF”

SPOILER-------------- I loved the ending of this weeks show! What a way to spice up the last season!

Yes he is the super evil version from the other universe/dimension. He must of used the mirorbox to follow Clark over here. Lionel is not going to hold a press conference. That’s for sure.

I know he was the other version, I kind of assumed since he was running after Clark in the other world he would end up being transported too.

oh ok. I guess I didn’t understand what you were trying to say. Regardless… that ending with him was awesome. I had to watch it twice. “I guess I showed up just in time… I want to see how it all works out.” Then he disapears into the crowd. Loved it.

Granted I would of loved to have Rosenbaum come back for the last season but having an evil Lionel is just as good. Not the sorta-good Lionel that we had after Jor el infected him the last few seasons before he died.

Bump because last night’s episode was awesome.
