The program is pretty straight forward - as the vast majority of people who have done it will echo the following statement: “Do it as written.” Good luck and EAT.
You don’t have to buy the book. You buy to avoid asking redundant questions and support a guy that came up with a simple, yet effective principal.
It’s a small price to pay.

Beyond 5/3/1 has the challenge. Check Amazon or Jim’s site.
The challenge article on this website is very detailed and has enough to get you going, including diet.
I am currently in week 3 of phase 2 and here is my best advice:
1-Do it as written
2-Make sure you are eating and resting enough
3-Do the opposite lift for volume i.e 5/3/1 Squats and 5x10 Deadlifts
4-DO IT AS WRITTEN
5-Stay the course, it gets better
