Waist Size?

Is waist size something that is mostly genetic? Assuming one is in a lean condition (10%-12% anyway), why would you still have a large waist? For example I am about 10%, 180lbs, and 5’9" with a 32" - 32.25". Does that sound like a large waist for my body size or am I just over thinking this whole thing again?

32" is NOT a big waist. Point a. Your waist size has a lot to do with genetics. Point b. please keep in mind that Bruce lee had a 29" waist at 140lbs /8%. Don’t worry about it.

You are over thinking it. Waist size is very much genetic and will largely be determined by hip width (unless you have freakishly overdeveloped external obliques).

Just to expand on it, someone with a large frame could be LEAN with a waist over 36". A 32" waist is not large at all. It is about average for most average framed people who happen to be leaner. That is why bodybuilding is about illusion.

In my opinion you need to post a picture of your waist. Spouting off numbers like “10%” seems firm but normally those numbers are estimates and vary by give or take 3%.

As for genetics, you can have a small/large sized bone structure and you can also be predisposed to carry more fat around your hips or butt. In the end though “32” is just a number and I wouldn’t worry about it.

Yup. It’s all about proportions, ratios etc.

Also, the acceptable international standard for male models, you know those stick figures who prance around in their underwear, is a 32" waist.

Magnum, it’s beooooutiful.

I probably underestimated the body fat % like you said. Either way, I’m not a fatty anymore. So just grow bigger shoulders I suppose? What % would you guess I actually am? Excuse the lame bathroom / cellphone picture please… I know.

You need bigger lats and shoulders and legs.

Your waist is fine.

It is the rest of you that is lagging.

You did good losing weight. Now, it is time to fill your frame back out which is hard for people like you to do who used to be fat and diet down first to really lean levels. It may take a while to get over feeling fat as you make gains.

So just stick with 5/3/1 for bodybuilding and eat more eh?

I don’t follow “5/3/1” but if it gives you a model to follow so you don’t screw up, have at it.

Yes, eat more, train harder and gain some muscle.

Disapprove of the program choice? Not enough volume or what?

Agreed, after seeing the pic. I really don’t think it’s a body fat or genetic issue you just need muscle in the aforementioned areas.

Let me rephrase that…“I don’t care about 5/3/1 because I didn’t use it to get big”.
