Vvfoo Training Log

My last incline bench PR was no spotter as well, very nerve racking lol made me feel like I really had to make the lift haha

Did you put on clips for an extra boost at the sticking point?

Lmao Im sure the clips I use weight at least 1lb.

Yes, but you power through the sticking point much more efficiently when you have no spotters, safeties, or ability to dump the weight.

April 8,2019 Bench PR 265lbs. 14 days after I did 260. Had to grind it out super slowly pst sticking point, need more triceps. Also drank insane amount of liquid lately and got up to 185 with water weight.

Or conversely you can do what I did when I tried this in 2013, and blow your left pec completely off your shoulder and require surgical repair and never be able to be strong in bench again… :frowning:

Not good… what was the weight?

Heheh, I had to dig back to the beginning of my log to find that. It was 255#. I was never super strong in bench to begin with, but now I seem to go in cycles where I’ll gradually work up into the mid-200’s for a 1RM and then do something to aggravate it again and take a huge step backwards, which I just did again last week. Some things never get back to 100% even with surgery.

Damn you got me scared now as thats exactly the weight I did without spotter and was talking about with angryordie500. I thought those type of injuries happen when you bench over 405 of some other super heavy weight like that.

Well, it depends. Heavy for you is heavy for you, and also bear in mind that I was almost 50 when I did this. Just don’t take safety lightly where benching is concerned. I had the same outlook, that not having a spotter and having collars on would force me to push through. You’re younger and a lot more resilient, and I’m sure you have a lot higher strength ceiling than I do at this point, so I’d hate to see you get derailed by an easily-preventable injury.

@vvfoo I digress to @OTHSteve here, don’t be stupid. Being stupid is my job.

But, I will say that if you live in fear of injuries, you’re probably not going to get very far in the world of weightlifting. Yes, I know I’m weaker than both of you.

Absolutely there’s no such thing as risk-free lifting, but you have to balance risk vs. reward. What’s the reward for trying a heavy bench without spotter or ability to bail?

I train in a gym thats always packed so im sure someone would help.

For the weights you (and I) are lifting we could just lay it down on the stomach and roll it off

Big balls will get in the way.

Ah I see. I’m on TRT. #smallballs

A huge PR.

Which you can also get with a spotter?

What ordie500 is trying to say is that there is a certain risk involved without a spotter which motivates you to complete the rep or die.
