Vinny's Strongman Log II

Yer nice pull man, well done

Doesn’t conventional for 6 months, or do any deadlifting for 8 weeks and pulls 640. " I am such a bad deadlifter" lol no way
Well done man!

Honestly my conventional blows. It wrecks my low back and SI joint and I can’t hang with the big pullers in my weight class who have me beat by 50-150lbs (some freak pullers out there). I do definitely make up for it with being good at everything else but yeah, I’d rather load a 400lb stone or do a carry and load medley with like the most awful satanic implements than pick up a 650lb barbell.

11/25/17 - Bw 224, back feels a lot better but still kinda fucked. Definitely also incapacitated due to post chain soreness so as that dies down i’ll feel a good bit better as well.

Seated DB Military
40x8,8
90x8
100x10
100x10
100x8 (neutral grip cause pec was bothering me)

I actually think neutral grip is better and in hindsight I should have just done it instead of normal grip. I do think it has helped my log press in the past.

Gotta love the old no deadlifting program giving better results than actual deadlifting.

This has actually made me want to test my deadlift max at some point. Probably once I actually finish my current macrocycle.

11/27/17 - Bw 225

Beltless Pause Front Squat
135x8,5,5
225x3,3
225x8
225x10
225x12 ugh, brutal and weak for me

So, each set got progressively better in terms of power output. I legit felt failure at rep 5 on the first set of 3, and my body became acclimated as I went.

I scheduled an appointment to get my knee looked at. I have some swelling (fluid I believe) building up outside the knee cap and just under the skin. I think it’s due to a cut I got on my knee and then constantly gnashing on it when doing mobility work before my training each day for months.

So I just wanted to write a little story about something I noticed at nationals.

You know how at every strongman contest you have that one guy that goes way too heavy on warm ups (usually log or some kind of clean and press) and he always does it like borderline strict with the most caveman form?

You also know how at every strongman contest you have that one (thousand) oblivious untrained person walking around with like sunglasses and crocs that isn’t aware of the dangers of heavy implements being used in proximity to them?

Okay good. So for some reason at nationals, there was an uncanny number of actual grandmas walking around the venue. We also had the obligatory warm up area for the log as a 5x5ft zone surrounded by onlookers with their backs turned to the athlete warming up.

Best part is, these grandmas would periodically (literally clockwork) slowly walk by serendipitously as the most overzealous heavyweight strongman was strict pressing 110% of his 1rm with the shakiest form ever. Both parties completely unaware of one another.

Basically, in conclusion, I’d like to say that I get it, grandmas are a thing and I mean I have one too, but for fucks sake put a leash on them or something. I was genuinely concerned as fuck. Any time I warmed up, I’d tell the people around me and ask some guy to stand in the pathway to prevent people from walking by as I did what I did.

Okay bye.

That’s pretty terrifying.

Having never been to a comp, I guess I just assumed it would be a little more well barricaded than what you’re explaining, especially at a national comp.

Although in high school, some of the track and field events were quite dangerous. There were a couple instances of coaches/student being struck with implements from the throwing events. One gentleman suffered some severe lacerations from being struck with a hammer (fortunately just the cable portion) on his side and arm. If the actual hammer has struck him, he would be dead. You never think that these things will happen, until they do.

Scary stuff.

11/29/17 - Bw 224, legs are trashed from squats, no deads just accessories

GM’s (super slow and controlled for maximum thicc)
135x20
135x20
135x20
135x20

DB Row
100x25
100x25
100x26

All rows were done without straps and without dropping/letting go of the dumbbell.

The lat and bicep pump was the best pump I’ve ever had. Outdoing every crazy high rep drop set rife bodybuilding workout I used to do. Or…my memory is really shit. Not sure.

LOL holy fuck.

Knee issue is just pre-patellar bursitis. This is due to banded distractions with not enough matting underneath and just gnashing on the knee cap. Need to be a bit more mindful I guess.

12/1/17- Bw 225, worked the barbell today upon realizing how poor my strict pressing strength has become, especially on a straight bar/axle. I’ll try to train this every other week rotating with some form of log.

Strict Overhead Press (barbell)
45x8,8
135x3,3,3
165x3
205x5

What ARE you? Do you actually get stronger the more sets you do in a session?

That last set with 205 was AMRAP LOL. And yeah, I’m going back to my roots with some of the insane drop set stuff. Gotta build some muskle.

12/3/17 - Bw 224, really working on front squats as of late. definitely the hardest exercise for me to resume after a break. Still hellbent on a 500 front squat. It’s gonna be much easier to pull 700 on deadlift than to do that.

Beltless Pause FS (60 sec rest on all sets)
135x5,5,5
225x3,3,3
275x5 stop feeling heavy stupid front squat that is almost half of what my goal is and also extremely not good to consider because uhhh that’s not good.

Slow eccentrics on all the working sets of 5. Gonna try more to do that instead of free falling into the hole.

12/5/17 - Bw 224, knees hurt from step ups which it looks like i’m gonna have to remove from my training or try to adapt to. Doesn’t really matter since no form of step ups have ever actually made my quads sore.

Opted for some slow tempo RDL’s thanks to Martins Licis. It’s one of the facets of deadlifts that I’ve never delved into.

Slow Tempo Pause RDL (3-4 second eccentric and pause at bottom)

Those were tough.

DB Row
100x25
100x25
100x25

I managed to not put down the dumbbell for every single set except the last one of my left (weak) arm. I had to put it down at 17 because I literally couldn’t perform a row with integrity due to fatigue. Of course finished to 25.

I did these because literally everyone and their grandmother swears these cure back pain. I’ll get a gauge on how I feel a bit later.

Lol…

They do traction your lower back it seems. Or I have a herniated disc that just hasn’t started giving me any pain/nerve related symptoms yet. The first time I did them I felt something in my lower back get pulled on (like when you hang from a pull up bar/inversion bench, especially after heavy spine compressing lifting).
