Vinny's Strongman Log II

Holy shit man! How do you not get freaked the hell out by such an experience?! Are you alright now?

Well 365 isn’t a very heavy weight for me, and I’m pretty stupid; I was actually going to try a 3rd time, but I stopped myself. I’m okay now. I think my right hip is a bit out of place from all these moving events. I kind of felt something off in the warm ups, and maybe it had to do with that, lol, don’t really know!

Oh btw, I don’t recommend doing that, ever. Generally, if something very out of the ordinary happens, it’s pretty much an invitation to swallow your pride and NOT push it. Better to do what I had done after, and just really hammer that weakness with higher volume and very light weights.

If it weren’t for physics and the law, we’d be unstoppable

It sure sounds like a scary experience. I don’t mean the passing out but the half-side-of-the-body-goes-numb-part. I would immediately think of nerve and or spine damage (and freak out).

Don’t worry I won’t! I am not the most reasonable guy around most of the time when it comes to training but definitely not as hardcore (or probably as dedicated) as you are!
Glad you are alright though!

You’re a strongman, man. You’re as dedicated as me.

Thanks for the concern too, I guess haha.

9/27/16 - Worked a moderate intensity/low freq carry medley.

135x20

Stone Shoulders

200lb sandbag x35’
260lb sandbag x20’

Carry Medley (2 rounds)
200lb sandbag x35’
140lb loaded BB sleeve x30’
260lb sandbag x20’

So the 200lb bag was actually the biggest issue. It’s not heavy, but it’s so fucking floppy that I can’t even hastily pick it up off the ground. I mean I can…but I’d literally be upright rowing it off the floor and catching it and that uses a lot of bicep and I’m still not comfortable being aggressive with stones/sandbags. Soon I will be though.

On the other hand, the 260 was very easy. That is not an overstatement either!

Front Battery Hold
25lbs x 90s

210x3
230x5
230x5
230x5
put soft belt on
230x5
230x5 ended up taking about 30 seconds in between each rep here. I just had nothing left. This is the threshold I need to be careful not to cross over. Head starts to hurt, body starts to ache.

9/29/16 - I think this pressing day is not needed considering it’s being trained directly after my event day, in which I’m pressing on. Pec minor and both front delts felt kind of strained from this session. I’ll see if I need revisions made.

Strict Log
110x3,3
160x3,3

drop set
180x6
160x6
110x15

Some conditioning and called it. Was not feeling too good.

10/1/16 - BW 231. I did not sleep very well last night and my diet has been shit. I mean macro wise it’s still okay, but the quality is down and that actually really affects me. Fortunately the session for the day was not very crazy and I didn’t have shit for expectations. Saving gas for some axle deadlifts in a few days.

5 Sec Beltless Paused Front Squat Circuit w/ Tire Flips (90 second rest between each round)
135x3
225x3
275x1
280x3/700x3
280x3/700x3
280x3/700x3

Above sets were tough enough considering the conjunctive variant. A 5 second pause without a belt is one of the most uncomfortable things ever but the weight was very manageable.

Pull Ups
x12
x12
x12
x8

One Arm DB Walks (just kind of walked back and forth on a 20 foot line)
100x3 sets of 1 minute-ish

Finished the workout with a 15 minute barbell walk up and down a hill with 80lbs. Was really uncomfortable on the cervical spine.

10/3/16

Axle Deadlifts (conventional)
405x3
500x5
500x5
500x5

The last set was tough on all reps to break it off the floor but really no issues here. Just about hit failure on the last rep of the last set, but only due to some starting position issues. I don’t even think I have to train the 18 inch pull for my show because of how strong my mid-shin/lockout is.

Sled Drags
280x40’,x40’
320x40’,x40’
360x40’
460x30ish feet, this was ridiculous…I pulled so hard the pole I used to hold onto actually slipped through the chain and the chain ended up riding up to my…pinky finger with all the force of my bodyweight. That hurt.

One Arm DB Walks (just focusing on keeping my torso straight and it really really hits the core hard)
40x 2 min walk per side
100x1 min walk per side
100x1min walk per side
100x1min walk per side

SO, I found a way to tax the shit out of the thoracic spine at no cost of the legs. I set an axle in the rack to just under chest height and took the weight out in a zercher type hold. Then I just slouched my spine down (with caution) and then just straightened my back out. Kind of like a GM but of just the mid-back, or something.

Zercher Thoracic Extensions (axle)
135x15
185x15
225x20 worth mentioning I do get a minor bend at the waist in these.
185x20
135x12 because this weight was so light, I was able to adjust my form more and tax my mid-back more than if I used lighter weight. Similar to hip thrusts, if you go too heavy, you can’t go through full extension of the hip (in this case the thoracic spine), and so I might stay light and just hammer TuT with these. Very cool exercise.

230x7 cleans and presses in 60 seconds. Pretty great performance considering all I had done before. Almost had an 8th.

The going numb makes me both jealous and heavily impressed. My weights aren’t as impressive, but I love training through the “inception” noise, as I call it. When things start to get dark and you hear this “WAHHHHHHH” type buzzing. Rock on boss.
I am training for my first strongman show, I may drop in now and again to pick your brain if that’s okay.

Thanks. Yeah, that inception noise isn’t heard by everyone, some people have limits.

Anyway, definitely more than happy to give you advice or have you glean takeaway from my training log, and if you aren’t already logging, you totally should. Would like to see your training and how it leads up to your show!

That is some impressive overhead strength! A local competition coming up has 230 log clean and press (clean once, if log drops below chest the lift is over) most reps in 45seconds. I’m not participating in it but for fun I tried 230lbs the other night and got one rep that was a pure GRIND.

Also, I should mention that I do pop in here to see all the amazing/sick things you do for your workouts… one of these days when I feel like kicking my ass I’ll attempt one of your workouts (with lighter weights ofc).

10/11/16 - Okay, bodyweight is down to 226 and I’m noticeably more vascular/leaner. I’m 10lbs down as of a year ago and almost 20lbs down from a few winters ago when I wanted to see if getting fat would make me really strong (didn’t work.) It’s pretty important to me to be as strong as I am at lower bodyweights. I feel like that speaks more in the sport of strongman than a max deadlift/squat/overhead. I just feel like I can move and not have to suck wind over doing a bunch of burpees. Thanks @Alpha

Was planning to do log one motions but my left bicep was feeling kinda sore so I stopped, it suffered enough abuse.

Strict Axle Press
220x10
drop set 1 min rest

drop set no rest
135x12 completely spent.
135x20

Did 3 sets of light rear delts +ab and realized I was smoked. Definitely worked hard last session and I can feel the fatigue still. This day will definitely be a day I take easier on myself.

Thanks for the kind words.

I checked your training log, you’ve got some strength! Why no competition though?!

10/13/16 - Hit a double bodyweight paused FS out of nowhere. Got the clue from my warm ups feeling fucking perfect, so I went up in weight.

Paused Front Squat
95x5
135x3
185x3
225x2
275x1
365x1
405x1
425x1
455x1 PR with more left in me. Never thought I’d be pausing this weight so easily. Super happy with this.

Tire Flip (all one motions, no kneeing)
700x5,5
700x10 stopped here because it was getting hard to generate enough power to complete the one motion and I don’t really see a point in building strength or proficiency in kneeing the tire over. I’ve done SO much of that in the past and I just feel like I get better carry over trying to treat a tire flip like a power clean.
700x12 holy crap this was hard toward the end.
700x10

Zercher Thoracic Extensions
150x15
150x15 HARD, wow.
150x12 mid-back is just so woken up from this
