I’m curious on your guys take on wearing them during your training sessions. I have had my Filas for about 5 months now and I love them. They are really comfortable and the flat foot really helps me in the deadlift, and I feel more stable in the squat. Is there any scientific evidence about wearing a flat footed shoe while training. Because I have heard a lot of guys tell me that these and wrestling shoes are really good options for footwear. What are your guys take on them, have you ever had a pair, and do you guys know If you can compete in them, or is that not allowed.
i train barefoot.
So you want to buy shoes in order to train barefoot?
Can’t you just train barefoot?
That is just too funny…considering the irony that the Crossfit thread is right below this one. Hahaha
I also wear wrestling shoes but I prefer Filas for deadlifting.
I like my merrel trail gloves for PL and everything I have to wear for shoes for basically. Except for professional type stuff where I have to look all spiffy.
I like to lift in the Vibram 5 fingers (KSO). I even did a few 50 mile trail runs in them, great shoes. Also, cheap water socks from walmart make good lifting shoes.
Got a pair or Vibrams about 6 weeks ago and I really love them. It’s not the ‘barefoot feeling’ I love, it’s that feeling mixed with the extraordinary grip and the separated toes. It honestly feels better having the toes separated out like that after years of having them compressed on socks and shoes. They tend to ‘grip’ the floor very well in the Vibrams.
Not a necessity, but I have them because I can and I love them.
Wearing Vibrams is not just like training barefoot. I have better grip in the Vibrams along with that feel of the ground…plus, I wouldn’t walk around my gym barefoot.
I know this is the powerlifting section, but I don’t see too many people who have actually worn them complaining about them.
I have 4 pairs of them now.
I love the Vibrams for lifting.
I just blew the big toe out of mine tire flipping on Friday.
Training barefoot would be best.
But My garage/Gym has a gravel floor.
Training barefoot is terrible. I love wearing the 5 fingers though. I wear them early on in training and for most of my dynamic efforts.
My hips knees and ankles are beat to shit from years of football. The vibrams take a ton of stress of my joints but have just enough support to keep me from feeling like a dirty hippy.
To echo the above, I’ve only heard good things about such shoes. I go barefoot (well, socks only) for all deadlifting variations, leg pressing, and generally when I want to get on my heels/feel my hamstrings better. Oly shoes for front/back squat. Converse for everything else.
They also work to get phone numbers because, for some reason, women can’t stop talking about them if they see them.
In fact, just put your number on the shoes.

I had durability issues and I had 3 pairs. One got a huge hole in one of the toes. In another, the sole part of the toe actually tore apart from the main part of the sole. In the other, the part inbetween the toes got shredded up to oblivion.

Dude’s too. They are a total dick magnet. Which is another plus to wearing them.

Dude, that sounds like you are just rough on shoes. I have had mine for a while and I don’t have any issues like that.
Also, in order to fray between the toes, you would have to be sticking something in there.
You make it sound like they are poorly made when that isn’t the case.

Walking and weightlifting. That’s it. The fraying thing happened to all of them. Starts with the fabric becoming separated from the rubber and top part. Than they just start to fray.

I’ve had my pair for a year and a half. I wear them for all my lifting and conditioning as well as lots of walking and hiking. Other than being dirty and smelly, mine are still in good shape. Maybe it’s the shape of your foot, or the way you walk or something?

I’ve heard that from a lot of people. Could be something to that. I do tend push of the ball of my foot and grab the ground with my toes more than most.

I found this fascinating machine in my house that uses Asgardian magic to “wash” clothes. You turn a few dials and water appears from no where and 40 min later…CLEAN CLOTHES.
I put my Vibrams in there and they were also “washed”. I will look into what incantations need to be chanted for you to experience the same machine when I get home.
