Okay, it’s not what you think. I just have a question on this. My gf was saying she say this show and that that kid nick lache benched 285 for 10 reps on it. Did anyone see this? I told her that there is no way in hell his pretty boy ass puts up that kind of weight, maybe maxes 285, but that’s it. I guess I’m just trying to settle an argument, anyone see this and can confirm/deny?
Well, I didn’t see it, but he’s not that small, and pretty boy or not, its entirely possible for him to put up that kind of weight.
There are people out there much smaller than him who put up bigger numbers than that.
Much bigger numbers.
285x10 is good, but nothing mind-boggling, even for a metrosexual…heh.
I agree, there ARE people smaller that bench more, but give hollywood trainers proclivities, I doubt that he has trained to the point to have the strength to be able to do that.
I dunno, he DOES have a pretty big chest…much bigger than most of the other boybanders
The most I saw him do was 225 for 10.
Along the same lines. Last night on Tough Crowd Colin Quinn was taunting Carrot Top and Rich Vos to to take off their shirts and they did. Vos was in pretty good shape, nothing special, but Carrot Top was ripped and muscular. I new he worked out, but didn’t know he was that serious. He’s probably like 5’5" and 155 pounds but he still looked big.
cool, the 225 for 10 was probably what he did, that’s inline with a 285 max. I just didn’t want to think a boy bander could bench more than me, LOL
i did happen to see this and he did do 225 for 10 reps, that is all. there was no 285 for 10 reps. i am sure of this. still pretty impressive.
It is hard to tell on TV but Carrot Top is actually over six feet.
As far as small guys and benching, there is a guy at my gym who is maybe, maybe 5’4" and probably weighs about 155-165 and I have watched him bench 365 for reps, and I have been told he’s benched over 400#, although I haven’t seen it myself. He routinely uses the 120lb dumbells, which is as high as they go.
Size doesn’t have shit to do with strenth.
Well, yes and no, I mean, a guy that is 5’4" and 165 lbs is pretty thick, plus he’s got a lot shorter levers than say someone 6’. Still, there are freaks out there. I did a PL meet at 181 where I saw some somoan kid that was 6’ (or close there abouts) bench 410 with a pause with no shirt or anything. My point is, I can usually tell when someone can bench the kind of way contingent on being able to do 10 reps with 285, I mean, that would put his bench in the neighborhood of 370 or so. No judging just on physique, Nick does not have the kind of upper back, lat, or tricep thickness I would expect from someone able to move that kind of weight.
Allright, I stand corrected :O, I didn’t think about it like that, it makes total sense.
I saw the episode and they never said that the guy could bench press 285 for ten reps. They showed him benching 225 for reps.
I have bench pressed 225 17 times a a height of 6’0 and bodyweight of 190 so it is certainly possible for people to be good bench presses and not necessary look it. I once had a guy spot me on 315 and he thought that I was going to get pinned. You should have seen his face when I slammed it up for 6 reps, ha ha.
Mike Mahler
Oh, I totally agree, I actually hit 15 reps with 225 at a bw of 190 and a max single of 315 at a height of 6’. I’m dieted down right now, but last week I 2 board pressed 295 for 3 reps with a 1 sec pause at the bottom of each rep. My only point, when I was talking to my girlfriend about it it that the dude just doesn’t have the build to be putting up 285 for 10 reps, that’s all. I didn’t mean to offend anyone or say small guys can’t bench or anything like that. Thanks for the response Mike, I have a ton of respect for your opinions and articles.
funny how the american test of strength is still the bench press. not taking anything away from the bench press, but if any female that watched that show this past week (wait I watched it too ) remembers what Lache mentions what his wife likes about him is his back. Yep the muscles we can’t see, as mentioned in countless articles by Westside BB peeps and DeFranco. I dare not call the guy a pretty boy. I’ve known some pretty boys irl, and those metros wouldn’t even have dared to move their own furniture into their residences, do many things on their own, or marry such a bodaciously “tata” woman. They usually marry someone equally frail and narrow.
But the miracle of editing shows Lache doing 10 reps of everything. The Van Damm editing special- many kicks from one kick. He was unfortunate to be packaged into the buffy squad, but fortunate to acquire the scrips and the wife.
That show as a whole was utter balderdash. If these personal trainers really believe everything they said on that show I would expect all their celebrity clients to be able to stand on one toe while spinning plates with the other foot with a thumb up their buttocks but still look “beautiful”. But they wouldn’t be able to compete in any episode of “Battle of the Network Stars”.
I’m just saying the fitness propaganda is full of spit. But Beyonce is da BeStEsT…then again I like 'em brownskins!
I’m short, and I can’t bench much. It’s always been a weak point for me. Long, lean arms just don’t make for a strong bench.
I have a friend, however, that is my height. While in college, he competed in the 148lb class. He did a 391 bench press, and his best is 409lbs. He trains in Olympic lifting now (he’s 35), and he rarely benches, but when he does, he can still get 315x5 and 365-375x1. He’s a freak of nature.
