Comment: this testing cycle went a little better than expected. The squat day went the best by far. The squats felt as though I could have took the weight for 5 reps. Bench went moderately. Deadlift my grip was the limiting factor, which disappointed me and made me consider using straps in some upcoming training cycles. I’ve been alternating the grip each set and when I do left hand underhand I’m a lot weaker. Maybe I just need to keep hitting that side. I’ve been neglecting grappling with everything going on and I’m only getting in 2 days per week the past couple weeks. Next week is spring break for class and I need to get in the gym more often. Grappling is the outlet I enjoy the most right now and I’ve been neglecting it.

Comment: Deads felt a lot better this week than last week. Bench was the day after and I felt beat up for that. Trained jiu jitsu hard over the weekend and I think that left me feeling a little beat up as well. Overall I’ve been really content with how my training has been going the past 6 months. I feel like the deads are slowly building, front squats and squats are building, and overall I’m eating better and locking in my sleep.

Comment: The intensification phase of my training has been going well. Bench and squats felt strong this week. Last week my squats were not feeling great. I didn’t know if it was because I took them a day later than normal and my grappling was impacting the squat. My adductors were toast and I felt them big time on the accessory work. Bench has been a little sloppy and I feel like I’ve been compromising the pressing movements by not completely locking out all the reps on OHP and bench. I think my pre-hab work has really been helping my hip. I’m hoping that the goblet squats help out with re-programming that movement. I have a week left on this session and I’m not sure where I want to go next. I’m thinking about going back and doing the 20 week beyond 5/3/1. The biggest issue I have is trying to deadlift in some of the morning sessions. I’ve been playing around with my schedule to try to get as many sessions of grappling and lifting in during the week while at least taking a day off. I feel like I’ve taken a step back with my walking and reading, which I miss. I’ve got a lot of extra work I need to get done over the next 6 weeks and I’m strongly considering competing in jiu jitsu in a month. If that’s the case I’m going to consider doing the 10000 swing challenge to give my body a break and focus on jiu jitsu. Then I’ll back track to doing a summer meet through lexen. This would allow me to complete my goal of 1 jiu jitsu and power meet during this year. I need to see if competing is something I even want to do. In the past I have not enjoyed competing and it’s just added stress on to my training. The catch is I think the more you compete the more you are able to enjoy it and reap the benefits of truly testing yourself.

The swing challenge is not really something I’ve been enjoying, nor do I feel great when I leave the gym. I had to bump class this past week so I haven’t been training jiu jitsu as much as I would like. I’ve been out of my routine for a little while now which has been bringing everything down as well. Comment: got a nice training week in. Finished this semester which was a huge weight off my shoulders. I had to get my ear worked on Wednesday because my canal was blocked by a hematoma. So just walked a lot in the middle of the week. I’m glad I’m lifting again. Lifting really helps me with my stress and just to get all my aggression out. Grappling gives me the community aspect of exercise. I can’t believe I finished my first year of the MBA. At times it’s been overwhelming with residency, but I’m glad I’m doing it. I feel as though it gives me the ability to get outside of medicine. I start my sports medicine fellowship application in the next month and I go out to San Diego in a week for the national conference. I’m really torn regarding where I should go with the next step.

I’m half surprised, half not, that I’m not in the same training shape as I was prior to doing the swings. Certain things feel more stable, and others just feel like garbage. My work capacity seems like it’s down by about a third. I was expecting more out of my grip today during deads, but it seemed to be the limiting factor.

Thankful: for the semester ending

Why did you decide to do a MBA? I could do it personally and a lot of people recommend it, but I never liked studying management, finance and project stuff. Is it tolerable?

I would be scared of losing my temper and thumping the head of asshats that do this kind of study.

Hey jasmincar,

For me there were several factors in my pursuit for the degree.

  1. I’m in the medical sciences and plan on being in private practice in some capacity upon completion of my training. Med professionals get minimal business, econ, finance, and management training during our formalized education. Medical professionals are known for making poor personal financial decisions and I’ve seen this within my family. I wanted some sort of formalized knowledge in these topics prior to entering practice.

  2. Currently, I work for a university so my tuition is largely covered. The school I’m attending is right around the top 25 schools in the US and has a fairly good reputation. I’m able to attend classes part time and there is minimal commute.

  3. I don’t know if I want to stay in medicine for a full career. Having dual background degree, DO and MBA, may open up different career opportunities if I want to get out of clinical practice.

Regarding opinions on pursuing graduate degrees. I have some classmates that automatically get a 50% pay raise for degree completion - obviously I would pursue the degree if I was in this situation. The majority of people I speak with in our program plan on using the degree to boost their career or CV in some capacity.

Cons of pursuing degree programs. Oftentimes there is no substitute for experience. At the end of the day this is school and case studies don’t carry the same consequences as real life situtations. There are financial costs of pursuing graduate degrees, and these are not cheap if you plan on attending a school with any sort of reputation. Some graduate schools have minimal to no accreditation. It takes time - I sacrifice time away from my family, it comes with increased stress, there is no guarantee that at the end of the course it will boost my career. There are courses you won’t give a shit about and they will have minimal relevance to whatever you plan on pursuing.

After finishing the first year I’ve been overall pleased with the program. My reading list has expanded to new areas. I’ve had the opportunity to meet people outside of medicine. I find that I really enjoy leadership, psychology, and econ courses.

I believe I remember in Tim Ferris’s new book Tools of the Titans a chapter that specifically discusses if you should pursue an MBA and other considerations of the degree.

I hope this was helpful.

Comment: didn’t have a great bench session. Was sliding like crazy on the rep set. Squats felt surprisingly good today which was nice. I wasn’t expecting a good session because I went to jiu jitsu beforehand. Weight has been consistently at 215. I got a full day off with no obligations for the first time in a while and it was awesome.

Comment: I feel like this cycle has been harder than the last. I remembered hitting my groove relatively quickly. Deads still don’t feel locked in. This week I’m back to a more intense rotation and I won’t have a day off for a couple weeks. It’s going to be a grind and I just need to stay positive and keep working hard. I start applying to sports fellowships and I’m polishing up my final statements for that as well. I’m also submitting my review article. Overall, I’m feeling more locked in, but I feel the stress affecting me physically. I need to keep the diet locked in and get as much sleep as I can. The routine is going to be the savior over the next couple weeks.

Thankful: for a weekend off

Comment: I can’t recall all of the accessory work over the past couple weeks. It’s been a crazy couple weeks at that. Haven’t had a day off in almost three weeks, started class, just came off more or less a 48 hour shift, and was just trying to survive up to this point. Stress has been high. Have only gotten to train jiu jitsu roughly 1x per week. Been doing KB work every day. Some of the training sessions were only the above movements, but the past couple sessions I’ve adjusted and could add back in the accessory work. I feel like I’ve been doing a reasonable job of auto regulation and cutting back on the volume when my body is under significant stress. I’m working through next Friday and then I might start to get my life back. The summer courses are on growth, healthcare strategy, and stats. I’ve been doing a poor job keeping up with my other readings, but that’s ok. Working on my fellowship application has made my wife and I consider a more extreme move for next year.

Thankful: for getting through the past couple weeks, my wife supporting me, and of course my dad
