Vacuum Training... Does It Work?

Hi, ive been reading in Arnolds book “The new encyclopedia of modern bodybuilding” and he say that the vacuum poses is effective to make the waist smaller. Is it true that you get smaller waist with doing vacuum? Does the waist get smaller permanently if you do it everyday?

I haven’t read it, but I think he meant that it gives the illusion of a smaller waist…

Great book. Bought it about a month ago and it is sitting right beside me.

I agree with the last poster. I think it’s more of an illusion of a smaller waist when posing in competitions.

I don’t think training them will give you a smaller waist but you will be able to do the vacuum pose and that will make your waist look smaller when you do that pose.

ditto

Also I have read stuff from Frank Zane (the master of that pose) Rusty Jeffers is good too!

That it also gives you greater control of your breathing so that you “look” more relaxed when your competing in a BB show…

I read in some article here that by sucking in regularly, you work your inner abdominal muscles and by having shorter, stronger fibers, your waist would become smaller.

eh, maybe slightly if you do it often and the reason for your protruding belly is a weakness in the TA. With the resting tone of that muscle increased, some corset effect may happen.

I reality, none to very little.

well he also thought barbell twists would make his waist slimmer…

My brothers and I find Vacuum Training to be very effective. It keeps the waist tight and makes my boobies (I mean my pecs)look bigger.

^^
Freakin’ hilarious. I knew there was more to this vacuuming thing. But don’t you guys “Hoover” over there?

The illusion of the smaller waist will be well worth the effort. If you have a six pack that sticks out from your pecs, you can remedy it with vaccume poses.

It can’t hurt - I say go for it. I mean, it’s not going to hurt your other lifts. Maybe physical pressure on fat cells does affect their ability to grow.

I’ve heard lots of stories of people gaining more fat when they give in and go up a pant size.

This was my understanding of the article too…
I love that book! And it weighs about 5 pounds so so I guess some skinny guys will actually build muscle just by holding and reading it too

Yea, but do you have to constantly hold your waist in, or does it stay like that?

it doesnt really make your weist smaller ,but when you get cut up your ab are flatter when relaxed and flexing, if you do it right it gets rid of a bloated look

I got that book some time back, noticed the new version has pics of shawn ray, levrone etc added in place of the originals. Must say i prefer draper, viator and the guys of Arnold’s era. They always looked like they were enjoying life.

Great book, super advice all the way through, except maybe the programs which seem likely to overtrain.

Anyway, the vacuum pose is one the old timers could do, way back to John Grimek and up until some time in the 80’s. It can help with core strength and muscle control as well as lending a lot to a pose. It would blow away most modern competitors but i dont suppose the judges would rate it anymore.

Excellent Observation.

For some reason athletes just don’t look like they are enjoying life that much now in their photos.

The article below somewhat disagrees, but you’ll have to use trial and error to see 4 yourself:
