Upright Rows?

Why? due to shoulder impingment?

The Upright Row always seem to be a love 'em or hate 'em exercise. Personally I feel they have been of great benefit to me so far. I do however think that they are not for everyone. Shoulder impingement issues seem to be a problem for quite a few people although sometimes the problem can be somewhere else.

For some reason we tend to be very quick at dismissing exercises when they don’t work for us. Perhaps we should look at why they aren’t working for us and if there are any other underlying issues (muscle imbalances, weakness etc) we should address.

As a side note: Often I find the people that dismiss the Upright Row have crap form when performing dips…hmmmm

personally, while my training partner dislikes them; i love them and feel they’ve done wonders for my shoulders…i do them with slightly wider than shoulder width grip and do drop sets of 140+ loaded onto an olympic bar(about 4-6 reps), followed by 100 preloaded barbell(6-8 reps), followed by a preloaded 80(4-6 reps) for a total of 14+ reps per drop set and at no point does not feel right…

Care to elaborate, and yes, I would like the technical details… lay it on me. [/quote]

I think the lateral raise and shrugs are both better exercises than anything the upright row tries to replicate. I see it as a waste. Shoulder impingement would be last on the list, far after “waste of time”.

For me, it doesn’t need to get any more technical than that. I’ve seen enough development in my traps and my shoulders to know that it isn’t necessary or a better movement. I used to do upright rows when I first started training…simply because everyone else was doing them. I am glad I grew out of that. I think much like flyes (which are equally useless), they look pretty and look like you are really doing something. Hell, newbies will think you are really training your ass off. The effect they actually have on your physique is much less.
