Upright Row - Dangerous or Not?

Do them with dumbbells. The movement is only bad because a strait bar fixes your hands in a bad postion causing torsion at the shoulder and wrists. Dumbbells eliminates this problem.

I do them and I don’t get any pain.

I have discomfort when I do lateral raises due to hyper laxity in both shoulders, that’s why I do the upright rows.

It’s true. It all depends on the person.

I’ve had multiple shoulder surgeries from baseball but I can still do them absolutely pain free and they’re actually one of my favorite movements.

If you have a bad back or shoulder,I wouldn’t advice you to do the exercise.
However, assuming you’re in great shape,I don’t see why not. I myself incorporate the upright row into my shoulder program with great success and no injuries.

Many people will spread myths about certain exercises being dangerous because they FAIL to do them right and end up hurting themselves.
I don’t think they’re dangerous. I just think most of the people who hurt themselves doing the exercise didn’t do it right.

I don’t do them. Hurt my shoulders. Ditto with DB Lateral raises as the movement in the upper arm is almost the same.

I do cleans and L-laterals instead and have no problems. But as many have said, if you have the shoulders for them you’ll be fine.

I did them for about 3 weeks. Then I found out they were bad to preform so I stopped doing them(it never hurt). Does that mean it is not bad for me to do?

Do Cleans instead of upright rows.

i rotate them in and out of my training and love them…but out of everyone in our club i’m one of the few that actually likes them…basically what i’ve seen is that maybe around 25% of the people we’ve trained can do them without pain or discomfort…

…the way we’ll approach them with someone new(if they want to try them), is by getting them started with dumbells first, one arm at a time, with a slight forward lean…this usually gives us a good read what they can do…
