I’ve been following Chad Waterbury’s Full body workouts for quite some time now, and I want to change things up.
Mainly I want to do more reps (between 6 and 8) with an upper/lower body approach.
I’ve been looking at some of CT’s workouts lately and can’t really decide which would be right for me. I am by no means a experienced lifter. I’ve got the basic compound movements down (deadlifts, squats, bench press etc) but havent got into olympic lifting yet. So there goes to limit my choices.
Do any of you guys have any suggestions in a routine that involves Upper/lower body w/o any OLY lifts?
Main goal is to gain mass by the way. Thanks.
You might want to check out DeFranco’s Westside 4 Skinny Bastards. It is a upper/lower split and he gives you the freedom of choosing your exercises and reps.
Usually I do a lower/upper routine (notice the order), although currently I’m not. My two main suggestions are:
Design your routine wisely, particularly the upper body days. It’s hard to squeeze in all of the exercises you want to do into two days. This is the major problem that this split presents, training the smaller muscles like arms after the upper body has been hit. Plan wisely unless you want your sessions to turn into marathons. Christian Thibaudeau has a nice article on how to quickly and effectively include the smaller muscles at the end of a long workout, “Beach Training for Performance-Oriented Lifters.” 7/11/05.
Train lower body before upper body (for example Mon:lower Tues:upper Wed:off Thurs:lower Fri:upper. I’ve always had better results with my leg days by doing this (without impairing upper body days).
Most importantly, trial and error from your own experiences with this split will help you evolve your routine to what works best for you (whether its with this split or another).

How about the superhero workout as posted in the Superhero Roundtable Discussion?
Or go look at some of the programs he’s written that fit what you want and pick one?
