You guys need to stop linking this kid articles about complex shit and telling him about rest pause and whatever.
He curls fucking 65lbs. He needs to start moving more weight every workout. You don’t need some complex shit. He’s not even busting plateaus. He’s just making newbie gains.
You’re probably referring to me, and if so you read into what I wrote incorrectly and I probably should have been clearer. I told him to look into different exercises for two basic muscle groups. Indicating to him to throw in a lift such as preacher curls along with db/bb curls is simple stuff. I gave two links, which I stated I only skimmed through, to help him read the difference between the bicep brachii and brachialis. I suppose the post may have been better left without the two T-Nation, which I could see may raise complication.
Yours and a few more. It’s just that being flooded with information fucked me over for a while when I started lifting. I needed someone to explain to me how basic progression, a body part split, and nutrition works. I was trying to do the dumbest shit with information gathered from various articles for the longest time.
I agree 100%. A friend who coached me along continually repeated for me to keep it simple stupid, and you hear the same sentiment from the big guys around here. Of course getting started I just had to over complicate shit with the latest nifty technique from the articles. It really doesn’t have to be that complicated.[/quote]
I believe this is almost everyone’s problem who isn’t making gains. It’s like they just don’t want to believe that the shit is this simple. But it is.

No man! because you have to do the more advanced stuff: the exact loads for optimal hypertrophy, rest intervals (1 second is 1 second man), what about all the techniques!! You can do MACRO SETS! Diet is the key BTW, 90% of your training will be useless if you don’t follow it properly. 1 gram of extra protein can lead you to excessive fat gain, or intoxication! This is so hard, no wonder I can’t get to 160 pounds!
Dedicated to whoever fits here (they know who they are).
Hey guys well its been a year since I made this post. Here are some updates
-up to 103 lbs now on curls from 65 this time last year (+38 lbs)
-bodyweight around 211.6-213.8 currently trying to get down to 205. going slowly and I’m still gaining strength so its all good (+25 lbs from last year)
-close gripping for reps what i could 1 rep max on normal bench this time last year
-repping 145 on standing military press
Major changes i made were making eating more of a priority. Also I changed from a 3-4 day/week WSFSB type workout to a 5 day bodybuilding split
Mon: Chest
Tues: Back
Wed: Legs
Thurs: Shoulders
Fri: Arms
My rep range is 3 sets of 5-7 reps. Whenever I get to 3x7 I add 10 pounds and go back to 3x5. I try to add one rep per week per exercise. A typical arm day is simple but with heavy weights
Barbell Curls
Close Grip Bench
Hammer Curls (pretty strict form)
One arm tricep pushdowns
“Pump” set of tricep kickbacks for left arm
misc. forearm stuff if i feel like it
and aside from the pump set and misc. forearm stuff i use that same rep range as stated above. my pump set is about 15-20 reps and I usually end with an isometric hold. thats just because I feel like i use my right arm a lil more when close gripping so i try to even it out a bit. forearm stuff changes every week but im trying to develop a structured system for those.
this past year has probably been my biggest in terms of gains but i bulked a lil out of control and got a bit fat. nevertheless i am fixing that and i know how to do it more smartly next time around. my current “cutting” (more of a recomposition phase) is like this:
Mon-Fri: low cal and semi-low carb
Sat: high cal and high carb (re-feed?>)
Sun: med cal and medium carb
I’ve come down from my heaviest at 216.7 to my lightest of 211.6 (as of monday) in about 6-7 weeks. slow but steady so i can maintain/gain strength and size
last thing: my goal for this time next year is 135 lb curls!
